2009 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove the camshaft on 2009 Toyota 4Runner?
A: The 1GR-FE engine requires draining coolant before proceeding with the removal of its camshaft while also removing the V-bank cover first. Disconnect the No. 2 ventilation hose followed by the air cleaner assembly removal procedure. Extract the intake air surge tank after disconnecting yanby-pass hoses, fuel vapor feed hose and ventilation hose and the 2 VSV connectors along with the throttle body with motor connector. Follow this method to proceed with removal: first separate 3 wire harness clamps and a hose clamp then remove 2 bolts from throttle body bracket followed by removing one bolt from the oil baffle plate after which you must remove 4 bolts from surge tank stays and 2 bolts from this tank. First remove the two nuts so you can utilize the wrench to remove the four bolts, intake air surge tank, and its gasket. Obtain and place the ignition coil assembly and cylinder head cover sub-assembly after removing 10 bolts along with 3 seal washers, 2 nuts, and gasket for both components. You should also perform the same procedure on the cylinder head cover sub-assembly LH. Set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression by aligning the crankshaft pulley notch with the timing mark "0" of the timing chain cover while making sure the camshaft timing gears match the bearing caps; if the timing is off turn the crankshaft 360° and repoint then stain the paint marks on No. 1 chain links which touch the timing marks. The chain tensioner assembly of No. 1 must be removed by avoiding crankshaft rotation without the tensioner installed. When the tensioner stopper plate is rotated clockwise you must push its plunger inside. You should achieve cam stopper plate placement with a 3.5 mm bar before you detach both bolts and the chain tensioner. When removing the No. 2 camshaft maintain it at a level position to avoid damage because the 1.0 mm pin should be inserted into the raised No. 2 chain tensioner afterward you should use a wrench to grip the hexagon shape of the No. 2 camshaft before removing its camshaft timing gear set bolt. Start by detaching the camshaft timing gear from the No. 2 camshaft before turning it counterclockwise to position the cam lobes of the No. 1 cylinder facing upward. Proceed to evenly loosen and remove the ordered sequence of 8 bearing cap bolts followed by extracting the 4 bearing caps along with the No. 2 camshaft. To detach the No. 2 chain tensioner assembly begin by removing its bolt followed by removing the tensioner along with its camshaft timing gear. While removing the No. 1 camshaft keep it steady in position because you need to hold the hexagonal portion with a wrench to loosen the camshaft timing gear set bolt while maintaining caution for the cylinder head and valve lifter. Move the camshaft timing gear and cut the No. 1 chain loose from the camshaft timing gear before turning the No. 1 camshaft with a counter-clockwise rotation until its cam lobes orient downward toward the number one cylinder. The 8 bearing cap bolts should be removed in a specific sequence together with the four bearing caps. You should remove the camshaft timing gear set bolt while elevating the No. 1 camshaft and proceed to extract the camshaft timing gear and No. 1 camshaft with the No. 2 chain that requires attachment to a string for protection from falling items inside the timing chain cover.
