- Q: How to remove the camshaft for Bank 2 on 2009 Toyota 4Runner?A: Engine coolant must be drained first before starting the procedure to remove the Bank 2 camshaft of a 1GR-FE engine. The servicemember must disassemble the V-bank cover, disconnect the No. 2 ventilation hose and remove the air cleaner assembly. Proceed by taking out the intake air surge tank as well as the ignition coil assembly then both cylinder head cover sub-assemblies. Make TDC/compression the position of the No. 1 cylinder and detach the No. 1 chain tensioner assembly. When removing the No. 4 camshaft sub-assembly maintain it horizontally to avoid hurting the cylinder head; use a wrench on the hexagonal part of the No. 4 camshaft to remove its timing gear set bolt. Then pull down the No. 3 chain tensioner until you can install a 1.0 mm pin to lock it into position before removing the camshaft timing gear from the camshaft. Finally use a proper torque to loosen the 8 bearing cap bolts for removal of the four bearing caps alongside the No. 4 camshaft. The procedure for No. 3 chain tensioner assembly includes unfastening its bolt before removing the tensioner while taking out the camshaft timing gear. Capture the No. 3 camshaft sub-assembly by starting with turning the crankshaft pulley counterclockwise to release chain tension then using a wrench to loosen the timing gear set bolt and finally sliding the timing gear when holding the hexagonal portion of the camshaft. After removing the 4 bearing cap bolts and stripping the 8 cap bolts loose the 4 bearing caps can come out. Afterwards separate the camshaft timing gear set bolt to lift the No. 3 camshaft for extraction of the No. 3 camshaft and camshaft timing gear while holding the No. 2 chain. The No. 1 chain maintenance requires a string to secure it because drops might occur inside the timing chain cover.
