2009 Scion xD Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to install the front shock absorber with coil spring on 2009 Scion xD?
A: Before installing the shock absorber onto the steering knuckle users need to first temporarily tighten a new nut through No. 2 suspension support. Then install the shock absorber onto the steering knuckle while securing it with 2 bolts and 2 nuts to a torque of 164 Nm (1672 kgf-cm, 121 ft-lbf) while preventing the bolt from rotation during nut removal. The front flexible hose and speed sensor should be installed with a bolt that requires a 29 Nm (300 kgf-cm, 22 ft-lbf) torque setting. During installation avoid any hose twisting. When the ball joint starts to turn with the nut, use a socket hexagon wrench 6 to secure the stud and install the front stabilizer link assembly along with a nut which needs to be torqued to 74 Nm (755 kgf-cm, 55 ft-lbf). Begin by tightening the front shock absorber with coil spring through fixing the shock absorber rod with a socket hexagon wrench 6, and tightening the nut to 55 Nm (561 kgf-cm, 41 ft-lbf). Next, install the front wheel by torquing it to 103 Nm (1050 kgf-cm, 76 ft-lbf). Lastly, fully tighten the front shock absorber. Finish the installation of front suspension support dust cover together with outer cowl top panel and front air shutter seal RH, front wiper motor and link and cowl top ventilator louvers LH and RH, hood to cowl top seal, and front wiper arm assemblies LH and RH with front wiper arm head caps. Close the inspection of front wheel alignment.
