  • Q: How to install the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly and related components on 2009 Scion tC?
A: Begin the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly installation process by attaching it to the parking brake cable equalizer while securing it using 4 bolts that require torque settings of 6.0 Nm and 5.4 Nm respectively (61 kgf-cm, 53 in-lbf and 55 kgf-cm, 48 in-lbf). Secure the No. 1 fuel tank protector with 5 bolts tight to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 in-lbf). The No. 3 parking brake cable assembly connects to the backing plate through a bolt which needs 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 in-lbf) torque. First apply high-temperature grease before installing the parking brake shoe lever LH followed by the parking brake shoe assembly LH then the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set and the parking brake shoe strut LH. Position the rear disc brake components on the left hand side before mounting them with the rear disc brake cylinder assembly LH. Starting with adjusting the parking brake shoe clearance proceed by installing the rear wheel and torquing it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft-lbf). The parking brake cable assembly No. 1 installation requires 2 bolts that need 12.5 Nm (128 kgf-cm, 9 ft-lbf) torque before installing floor carpet while performing the parking brake cable connection to the parking brake equalizer. To mount the parking brake cable heat insulator you should use 2 nuts which need to be tightened to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 in-lbf). The installation process includes placing center exhaust pipe assembly followed by parking brake lever sub-assembly and front seat assembly RH along with cowl side trim sub-assembly RH and front door scuff plate RH and rear console box assembly and finally rear upper console panel sub-assembly and front upper console panel sub-assembly and shift lever knob sub-assembly (for manual transaxle). Check the negative battery terminal to connect the cable while keeping in mind that system initialization might become necessary after reconnecting. The technician should inspect the ABS sensor signal after checking the parking brake shoe and disc for settle before adjusting the parking brake lever travel and examining exhaust gas leaks.
