2008 Toyota Land Cruiser Cylinder Head Gasket Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to install the cylinder head gasket on 2008 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: The installation of a cylinder head gasket starts with examining both the cylinder head set bolt and the cylinder head sub-assembly. The inspection of piston protrusions in the right-hand cylinder head sub-assembly begins through solvent cleaning of the cylinder block followed by setting the piston at slightly ATDC position. Set the cylinder head gasket on the cylinder block surface where the Lot No. stamp faces upward while keeping the gasket front section free of oil. You should set the cylinder head carefully on the cylinder block without applying strain to the gasket. A thin layer of engine oil should be applied both to the cylinder head bolts threads and the bolt head areas. A 10 mm bi-hexagon wrench will allow you to install each of the 10 cylinder head bolts with plate washers while following several steps to tighten them evenly until they reach 36 Nm (367 kgf-cm, 27 ft-lbf). In the first step apply paint to each bolt head followed by two rounds of 90° bolt tightening in the same order until the painted marks point toward the back. The technician will install the 2 bolts until they reach a torque that equals 21 Nm (214 kgf-cm, 15 ft-lbf). Perform the identical procedure when installing the cylinder head sub-assembly on the left-hand side. After installing several components you must place the valve stem cap then install the valve lash adjuster assembly together with the No. 1 valve rocker arm sub-assembly. Set in place both the camshaft and the exhaust manifold sub-assembly. The cable's end should connect to the negative battery terminal while checking for exhaust gas leakage and inspecting ignition timing and testing engine idle speed.
