2008 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What precautions should be taken when replacing the oil filter element on 2008 Toyota Avalon?
A: Engine oil contact should be limited when replacing 2GR-FE engine oil filter elements because skin irritation may occur and the oil contains dangerous contaminants. You should wear protective gear and gloves as well as performing a thorough skin wash with soap and water after touching any oil-components. An appropriate disposal location exists for used oil and oil filters. Start the process by installing a 15 mm hose to the pipe then detach the oil filter drain plug from the oil filter cap. Insert the pipe combined with the hose carefully into the oil filter cap still making sure the O-ring goes on the oil filter cap side and position the hose end inside a container to empty the oil fully. To remove the oil filter cap successfully use Special Service Tool: 09228-06501 along with the necessary steps. Remove both the oil filter element as well as O-ring while being cautious to not use tools on the O-ring to protect the cap. A clean oil filter cap requires treatment with engine oil before the installation of a new O-ring on its cap. Before attaching the oil filter cap with Special Service Tool: 09228-06501, install the new filter element first while evenly coating the inside of the engine-side cap and the installation surface with engine oil. After tightening the cap to 25 Nm (255 kgf-cm, 18 ft-lbf), ensure that no gaps exist between the parts. Apply 13 Nm torque to install the oil filter drain plug without permitting the O-ring to get trapped within. After adding clean engine oil to the crankcase it is necessary to start the engine to check for any oil leakages in the combination of oil filter cap and oil filter drain plug.
