2008 Scion tC Axle Shaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to install the axle shaft assembly on the LH and RH sides on 2008 Scion tC?
A: Before installation of the LH side front drive shaft assembly begin by applying gear oil to the inboard joint shaft spline followed by shaft spline alignment and a brass bar and hammer installation of the drive shaft and attention to maintain proper orientation of the snap ring opening downward position while protecting oil seal boot and dust cover. For the RH side of installation follow the same coating process of the inboard shaft spline, then use two bolts to connect the drive shaft with a torque setting of 64 Nm (650 kgf-cm, 47 ft-lbf). Align the matchmarks before installing the drive shaft to the front axle with caution toward the outboard joint boot and speed sensor rotor. The front No. 1 suspension lower arm sub-assembly requires installing the lower ball joint to suspension lower arm with one bolt and two nuts that should be torque tightened to 89 Nm (908 kgf-cm, 66 ft-lbf). After installing the steering knuckle tie rod end the technician should tighten the nut to 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft-lbf) and if the cotter pin hole misalignment occurs they should torque the nut at 60 degrees more. Place the speed sensor front to the steering knuckle using a bolt torqued at 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 in-lbf) and join the speed sensor wire with the flexible hose to the shock absorber through a bolt torqued at 19 Nm (194 kgf-cm, 14 ft-lbf) while paying attention to protect the speed sensor from damage and maintaining a clean environment free of foreign materials and avoiding wire twisting during the installation process. Use a 6 mm hexagon wrench when installing the front stabilizer link assembly with a nut that requires a torque of 74 Nm (755 kgf-cm, 55 ft-lbf) while holding the stud if the ball joint turns with the nut. Install a fresh axle hub nut on the threaded parts of the drive shaft and hub followed by a 216 Nm (2200 kgf-cm, 159 ft-lbf) torque before employing a chisel and hammer for staking the nut. The engine then needs to be fitted under the cover and the front wheel should be torqued to 103 Nm (1050 kgf-cm, 76 ft-lbf) while the automatic transaxle fluid needs to be added with necessary inspections and adjustments. After oil addition for manual transaxle one should perform the necessary inspections. Finish the procedure by inspecting and adjusting front wheel alignment and checking the ABS speed sensor signal.
