2007 Toyota Yaris Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the PARK/NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH on 2007 Toyota Yaris?
A: Before repairing or servicing the PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH perform an on-vehicle inspection with parking brake engaged and ignition ON while testing that engine operation restricts to N or P positions and the Back Up light and reverse warning buzzer activate in R position. A failure detection prompts you to examine the park/neutral position switch to check its continuity. The removal process starts with disconnecting the battery cable from the negative terminal followed by engine cover removal from the left-hand side to free the transmission control cable assembly through nut and clip removal. Start by disconnecting the connector attached to the park/neutral position switch assembly and then remove its nut and washer along with control shaft lever before using a pick tool to pry out the lock plate. Finally detach the manual valve shaft nut and withdraw the switch assembly. Check the switch assembly performance after disconnecting its connector and testing resistance across the shift lever through each available position. The switch assembly demands adjustment when users set the shift lever in N position whereas they align the groove with the basic neutral line before securing the switch in place while tightening its bolts to 5.4 N m (55 kgf cm, 48 in. lbf). A switch operation check follows the adjustment procedure. The park/neutral position switch assembly should be installed onto the manual transaxle while maintaining bolts in place before a lock plate installation and manual valve shaft nut torque adjustment to 6.9 N m (70 kgf cm, 61 in. lbf). Position the control shaft lever without bolts then turn it counter-clockwise until it stops before turning it clockwise 2 notches and aligning the groove with the neutral basic line before securing the switch using torque of 5.4 N m (55 kgf cm, 48 in. lbf). Install the nut followed by the lock plate on the transmission and combine it with a washer before torquing the assembly to 13 N m (130 kgf cm, 9 ft. lbf). After that, secure the park/neutral position switch assembly connector. The transmission control cable needs to be placed on the control shaft lever accompanied by the nut while achieving 12 N m of torque (122 kgf cm, 9 ft. lbf). After that install the cable into the bracket with a fresh clip. Complete the negative cable reconnection by applying torque of 5.4 N m (55 kgf cm, 48 in. lbf) after which inspect the shift lever position followed by testing the park/neutral position switch assembly then reinstall the engine under cover LH.
