2007 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the camshaft on 2007 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The procedure starts by disconnecting the battery cable from the negative terminal followed by removing the No. 1 sub-assembly of the under cover by unbolting its four pieces. The service includes draining engine coolant before taking out 19 bolts with two nuts securing the cylinder head cover sub-assembly and ventilation hose, ignition coils, and air cleaner cap sub-assembly, fan shroud, intake air connector and radiator support to frame seal LH, and engine wire harness clamps, VSV connector, throttle with motor body connector, camshaft position sensor connector, and ignition coil connectors. Remove the timing chain guide by unfastening 2 bolts and the O-ring and set the No. 1 cylinder to TDC/compression position by rotating the crankshaft pulley clockwise until its timing mark notch reaches "0" along with verification of camshaft timing gear marks. A 10 mm socket hexagon wrench should be used to loosen the head straight screw plug after placing paint marks on timing chain plates and holding the No.2 camshaft hexagonal lobe with an adjustable wrench. The service hole of the chain tensioner requires a screwdriver to elevate the stopper plate while the No. 2 camshaft should move clockwise slightly to push the plunger before removing the screwdriver. Lay a 3.0 mm (0.118 inch) diameter bar into the stopper plate hole before securing it with tape whereas removing the camshaft timing gear through uniform loosening of the 21 bearing cap bolts. People must loosen the oil delivery pipe while removing both the O-ring and the camshaft to extract the camshaft as well as the No. 2 camshaft without hurting the cylinder head. Secure the chain to the engine compartment using string or wire in order to block outside objects. First clamp the camshaft in a vise without breaking it and tape the camshaft timing gear oil paths before puncturing the tape and testing its advance rotation with air pressure. First detach the fringe bolt that holds the camshaft timing gear before you place the assembly in position and secure every element with the fringe bolt tightened at 78 Nm (795 kgf-cm, 58 ft. lbs.). To install the camshaft apply clean engine oil to both the cam portion and cylinder head journals then position the timing chain correctly to the camshaft timing gear while making sure the paint mark matches the timing mark. You should start by installing the provisionally the No. 1 camshaft bearing cap before checking the No. 2 camshaft bearing caps for installation of a new O-ring followed by the provisionally installed camshaft oil delivery pipe. Start by applying engine oil to the camshaft timing gear and install the timing chain. Then follow up with bolt tightening according to specified order and make sure the timing marks remain accurate. To structure the camshaft timing gear straight pin hole with the No. 2 camshaft straight pin users should hold the hexagonal lobe with an adjustable wrench while tightening the bolt to 78 Nm (795 kgf-cm, 58 ft. lbs.). Before attachment, place adhesive on the timing gear case threads and subsequently tighten the 3.0 mm (0.118 inch) diameter bar to 17 Nm (170 kgf-cm, 12 ft. lbs.). Before securing the cylinder head cover provisionally insert 19 bolts and 2 nuts while tightening them to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.). Then install the timing chain guide with 2 bolts at 10 Nm (102 kgf-cm, 7 ft. lbs.) and apply seal packing before installing the cap with new O-ring. Attach the ventilation hose before placing the ignition coils and engine wire harness clamps and every connector needed for operation. You must install the intake air connector and air cleaner cap sub-assembly and fan shroud prior to securing the radiator support to frame seal LH while reconnecting the negative battery terminal at 3.9 Nm (40 kgf-cm, 35 inch lbs.) and performing leak checking before adding engine coolant to finish the process by installing the No. 1 engine under cover sub-assembly with 4 bolts at 30 Nm (306 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.
