2006 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the camshaft on 2006 Toyota Tacoma?
A: Start camshaft servicer by disconnecting the negative cable from the terminal followed by removing No. 1 engine under cover subassembly bolts (for 4WD). Engine coolant drainage occurs before removing the radiator support to frame seal LH and the fan shroud together with the air cleaner cap sub-assembly and the intake air connector and cylinder head cover sub-assembly from its mounting position by disconnecting all ignition coil connectors, throttle with motor body connector, VSV connector, camshaft position sensor connector and removing engine wire harness clamps for subsequent ignition coils removal and removal of the 19 bolts and 2 nuts which secure the cylinder head cover. The procedure for camshaft removal begins by uninstalling the timing chain guide using its two bolts and O-ring before proceeding to set the No. 1 cylinder at TDC/compression. After aligning the crankshaft pulley timing mark, mark the timing chain plates followed by camshaft removal. You can remove the head straight screw plug using a 10 mm socket hexagon wrench after you loosen the bolt by holding the No. 2 camshaft hexagonal lobe with an adjustable wrench. The service hole of the chain tensioner allows a screwdriver for lifting the stopper plate after rotating the No. 2 camshaft clockwise with an adjustable wrench maintained in position. A 3.0 mm (0.118 inch) diameter bar must be inserted into the stopper plate hole before securing it with tape. The camshaft timing gear can then be removed through the 21 bearing cap bolt loosening process done uniformly. First disconnect the camshaft oil delivery pipe along with its O-ring before removing the camshaft bearing caps. Secure the chain to the engine compartment through string or wire attachments which will protect it from entering potential foreign materials. To test the camshaft timing gear rotation during advanced states apply air pressure to the vise-clamped camshaft while vinyl tape covers its oil paths followed by tape puncturing. First remove the fringe bolt of the camshaft timing gear then position the gear directly on the camshaft while keeping the key groove with straight pin aligned before tightening the fringe bolt to 78 Nm (795 kgf-cm, 58 ft. lbs.). Place the camshaft while using clean engine oil to position the timing chain at the camshaft timing gear while verifying the correct settings for valve rocker arm. The sequence of bolt tightening must be followed when installing the new O-ring timing chain guide and cylinder head cover sealing pack must be applied along with the correct torque specification. The last step involves connecting all components such as the ventilation hose and ignition coils together with the engine wire harness clamps while re-establishing the negative battery terminal connection before performing engine coolant addition and leak verification. Remove all necessary costs for installation of the No. 1 engine under cover subassembly according to torque specifications.
