- Q: How to service the Clock Spring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2007 Toyota RAV4?A: Service of the Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring begins with negating the car's battery cable followed by a minimum 90-second period to stop Air Bag and seat belt pretensioner deployment. Start by removing the steering pad assembly after setting the front wheels in a straight position before moving on to removing the steering wheel assembly. The technician should perform several steps before handling the Clock Spring sub-assembly which involves lifting up the upper steering column cover then unclipping four stops and pulling out the cable carefully without damaging the Air Bag wire harness. To install the Clock Spring begin by checking the front wheel alignment then set the turn signal switch to neutral and remove the lock pin if changing it with a new part. Connect the connectors to the Clock Spring while you attach 4 clips to the upper column cover. Then install the upper steering column cover followed by the lower steering column cover through 4 claw attachment. Adjust the Clock Spring through counterclockwise rotation until it reaches firm tension before proceeding with clockwise rotation of 2.5 turns for proper mark alignment; steer clear of turning with the Air Bag wire harness. As the last step install the steering wheel assembly then the steering pad assembly before reattaching the cable to the negative battery terminal for inspection of the steering pad assembly and SRS warning light check along with inspection of the steering wheel position.
