2007 Toyota Matrix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you service the Clock Spring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2007 Toyota Matrix?
A: The servicing of the Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring requires you to first review safety information about restraint systems. Disconnect the battery lead cable from the negative battery terminal and wait for 90 seconds to avoid Air Bag activation. Unbolt the steering pad followed by the steering wheel assembly while also taking off the steering column cover through removal of its 3 lower bolts. In the first step disconnect the connectors from the clock spring while sliding off the upper cover and be careful to protect the Air Bag wire harness from damage. In order to remove the clock spring properly you must first disengage its 3 claws function. Install the clock spring by maintaining a straight steering position and switch at neutral position to prevent pin damage. To install the clock spring, engage the 3 claws by removing the lock pin if swapping it unless replacing it with a new one and reconnect all connectors maintaining care of the Air Bag wire harness. Fix both pieces of the steering column with screw installation onto their respective covers. Perform the clock spring adjustment when disconnecting both the ignition switch and negative battery terminal for at least 90 seconds. The clock spring needs counterclockwise rotation until firm and follows with clockwise rotation of about 2.5 turns to align the marks while the cable should not touch the Air Bag wire harness. Finish by reattaching the negative battery terminal while also installing the steering wheel assembly then steering pad followed by inspecting the steering pad before system initialization which might be essential when the battery is off and verifying the SRS warning light.
