2007 Scion tC Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to inspect and test a radiator cap sub-assembly on 2007 Scion tC?
A: The radiator cap sub-assembly needs water rinsing if contaminated and both pressure valve and relief valve require wetting with engine coolant or water before using a radiator cap tester while maintaining a tester position at 30 degrees above horizontal. A radiator cap tester should be used to inspect the vacuum valve against air leakage during controlled pumping at a rate of 1 push per 3 seconds or slower. Any absence of air indicates the radiator cap needs to be replaced. The tester must be pumped at 1 push per second for the first pump to close the vacuum valve in order to check relief valve opening pressure. The standard opening pressure should be between 74 to 103 kPa (0.75 to 1.05 kgf/cm2, 10.7 to 14.9 psi) while the minimum pressure stands at 59 kPa (0.6 kgf/cm2, 8.6 psi). If the opening pressure falls below the minimum, a replacement of the radiator cap is necessary and the tester's maximum reading can be used as the opening pressure. You should inspect the vertical fins of the engine during on-vehicle maintenance while also unblocking them by washing with water or a steam cleaning system followed by compressed air drying. Use a screwdriver or pliers to straighten bent fins while keeping water away from electronic parts and keep a sufficient distance between the steam cleaner and core to protect the fins.
