2007 Scion tC Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the parking brake cable on 2007 Scion tC?
A: The parking brake cable service and repair process starts with disconnecting the cable from the negative terminal while waiting 90 seconds to avoid Air Bag and pretensioner activation. Rephrase the parking brake process by beginning with the manual knob removal followed by front and rear console panels then the rear storage tray before taking off the parking brake lever. The repair process starts with disassembling the front door scuff plate as well as the cowl side trim sub-assembly and front seat assembly RH before removing the center exhaust pipe assembly and the parking brake cable heat insulator through its 2 nuts. The No. 1 parking brake cable assembly can be removed by first disconnecting from the parking brake equalizer then removing the floor carpet and lastly taking out the 2 bolts and parking brake cable. Start by removing the rear wheel and proceed with the removal of the rear disc brake cylinder mounting LH alongside the rear disc brake cylinder assembly LH, the rear disc, parking brake shoe strut LH, parking brake shoe adjusting screw set, and parking brake shoe assembly LH then the parking brake shoe lever LH. The service begins with disconnecting the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly by first unscrewing the bolt and detaching it from the backing plate before eliminating the No. 1 fuel tank protector by disassembling all 5 bolts. Introduce the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly removal by removing four bolts alongside the cable retainer from the body before disconnecting it from the parking brake equalizer and taking out the parking brake cable. Begin installation by attaching the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly to parking brake cable equalizer before securing it with 4 bolts at A torque of 6.0 Nm (61 kgf-cm, 53 inch lbs.) and B torque of 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). Then install the No. 1 fuel tank protector using 5 bolts at 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). Finally connect the No. 3 parking brake cable assembly to the backing plate using a bolt torqued to 8. The correct installation procedure involves applying high-temperature grease followed by adding the parking brake shoe lever LH along with parking brake shoe assembly LH and parking brake shoe adjusting screw set before installing parking brake shoe strut LH. Finally, place the rear disc and rear disc brake cylinder mounting LH while using the rear disc brake cylinder assembly LH. Fasten the rear wheel after toeing in the parking brake shoe clearance to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Position the No. 1 parking brake cable assembly in place using two bolts before torquing them to 12.5 Nm (128 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). Reinstall the floor carpet before joining the parking brake cable to the equalizer then installing the cable. The installation of parking brake cable heat insulation involves tightening two nuts to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.), then assembling the center exhaust pipe and parking brake lever sub-assembly and front seat assembly RH. Put back the front door scuff plate RH and the cowl side trim sub-assembly RH along with rear console box assembly, shift lever knob sub-assembly for manual transaxle and front upper console panel sub-assembly and rear upper console panel subassembly. The last procedure involves connecting the cable to the negative car battery terminal then performing initialization followed by checking ABS sensor signal and parking brake shoe/disc settlements and parking brake lever travel adjustment with exhaust gas leak detection.
