2006 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Vapor Canister on 2006 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The first step to work on an Evaporative Emission Control Canister consists of two procedures: discharging fuel system pressure and removing the negative battery cable. The first step includes disconnecting both the fuel tank main tube and fuel tank return tube and then removing the fuel tank assembly. Service Charcoal Canister Filter No. 2 by unfastering the bolt followed by ABS wire harness clamp removal and freeing EVAP pipe from the hose clamp while also untethering the breather pipe from both the EVAP system and the charcoal container then unscrewing the final portion to extract Charcoal Canister Filter No. 2. To take out the charcoal canister one must first disconnect the connector along with the EVAP tube before removing a bolt and two nuts then disconnect the fuel tank vent hose by squeezing the retainer while pulling the connector out. When removing dirt from the fuel tank vent hose connector maintain a scratch-free surface and keep foreign objects away from all components after disconnecting. Use your hands only to perform this installation step and safeguard the disconnected components within vinyl security bags. Push and pull operations on fuel vent connector and pipe will help break the stuck connection. The fuel tank vent hose installation requires users to properly align the connector with pipe before pushing it inside until a "click" sound occurs. Inspect the hose connection area for damage as well as foreign objects before fitting it into place and verify the secure connection by using the quick connector to pull. Place the charcoal canister inside its mounting bolt while attaching two nuts. Torque the assembly to 20 N.m (204 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf). Next, connect the EVAP tube followed by the connector. Fasten Charcoal Canister Filter No. 2 using the nut to reach 20 N.m (204 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf) torque and attach the breather hose to the charcoal canister and pipe by securing the clamp while connecting EVAP pipe with the clamp. The ABS wire harness clamp should be installed with its corresponding bolt which requires 14 N.m (142 kgf.cm, 10 ft.lbf) torque. After reinstallation of the fuel tank assembly and connecting both fuel tank main tube and return tube, reconnect the cable to the negative battery terminal while torquing at 3.9 N.m (40 kgf.cm, 35 in.lbf). Verify the system for any fuel leakage.
