2006 Toyota Solara Starter Motor Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the starter motor on 2006 Toyota Solara?
A: Service and repair of the starter motor begins with magnetic switch assembly disassembly which includes nut removal and lead wire disconnect followed by magnetic switch and its two screws from the starter drive housing then removal of the magnetic switch and its attached return spring and plunger. The next step involves separating the starter field frame assembly by extracting two through-bolts while pulling out the field frame with commutator end frame before dividing them apart. After separating the field frame from the armature plate continue with the screwdriver pry removal of the starter commutator end frame cover. To take out the starter armature assembly from the commutator end frame use snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring and plate washer. Extract the three planetary gears from inside the drive housing unit of the starter. During reassembly apply grease to the planetary gears as well as the pin parts of the planetary shaft before inserting all three planetary gears. Utilize snap ring pliers to coat the plate washer before installing the starter armature to the starter commutator end frame. The procedure ends with the installation of the plate washer along with a new snap ring through snap ring pliers installation. The snap ring should be measured with a vernier caliper to ensure its length stays below 5.0 mm (0.197 in.) before moving ahead. To assemble the starter the user should first mount the starter commutator end frame cover before placing the armature plate inside the starter field frame where the keyway of the starter plate matches the key inside the starter field frame. The installation process continues by placing the rubber end frame edge into the corresponding field frame section before securing the end frame. Install the starter field frame by setting its protrusion into the starter drive housing cutout then fasten it with two through bolts torqued to 6.0 N.m (61 kgf.cm, 53 in.lbf). The magnetic switch assembly procedure requires greasing the plunger and hook before hanging the plunger hook of the magnetic switch to the drive lever and installing the plunger and return spring and screwing the magnetic switch into place with 7.5 N.m (76 kgf.cm, 66 in.lbf) torque followed by connecting the lead wire to the magnetic switch through the nut, torquing to 10 N.m (102 kgf.cm, 7 ft.lbf).
