Starter

The replacement procedure for starter motor begins with disconnection of the battery negative terminal. The process begins by taking out the air cleaner assembly and its accompanying hose and then the air cleaner inlet No.1. The starter assembly removal process starts by disconnecting connector terminal 50 followed by terminal cap removal to access the nut and pulling out the wire harness from terminal 30. Remove the starter assembly by uninstalling its two securing bolts. When installing the starter assembly begin by fastening it with the two bolts using 37 N.m (380 kgf.cm, 26 ft.lbf) torque. Before closing the battery terminal cap, connect the wire harness to terminal 30 where you will secure the nut through torquing it to 9.8 N.m (100 kgf.cm, 87 in.lbf) before adding the cap and connecting terminal 50 to the starter assembly. Place the air cleaner inlet No.1 in front of the cleaner assembly before installing the hose and restoring the negative battery terminal connection for a system initialization if necessary.

The first step to replace or remove the starter motor involves disconnecting the negative battery cable yet initialization steps might apply depending on system type. Proceed by taking off first the cool air intake duct seal followed by both the No. 1 engine cover sub-assembly and battery and inlet air cleaner assembly. The final step to remove the starter assembly requires disconnecting the starter connector followed by opening the terminal cap and removing the nut before separating the starter wire. Complete the removal by taking off the two bolts which secure the starter.

Install the air cleaner inlet No.1 and the air cleaner assembly with hose.

Use snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring and plate washer, then extract the armature.

Disconnect the battery negative terminal.

Apply grease to the planetary gears and pin parts of the planetary shaft.

Disconnect the terminal 50 connector from the starter assembly, remove the nut and disconnect the wire harness from terminal 30, and then remove the 2 bolts and starter assembly.

Initialize the Front Power Seat Control System if the battery was disconnected, the D/C CUT fuse was replaced, the power seat switch was replaced, or the power seat assembly was removed.

Disconnect the terminal 50 connector from the starter assembly, remove the nut and disconnect the wire harness from terminal 30, and then remove the 2 bolts and starter assembly.

Apply high-temperature grease to the plate washer and armature shaft, install the starter armature into the starter commutator end frame, and secure it with a new snap ring and plate washer.

The air cleaner assembly should be torqued to 5.0 Nm (51 kgf.cm, 44 in.lbf).

Connect the cable to the negative battery terminal.

Disconnect the terminal 50 connector from the starter assembly, remove the nut and disconnect the wire harness from terminal 30, and then remove the three bolts, clutch flexible hose bracket, and starter assembly.

Take out the air cleaner inlet No.2 by disconnecting the VSV connector, removing the wire harness clamp, and unscrewing the 2 bolts.

Ensure the connector connection and accessory installation are checked.

Install air cleaner inlet No.1 with a torque of 5.0 Nm (51 kgf.cm, 44 in.lbf).

Reconnect the starter wire with the nut, torquing it to 13 Nm (130 kgf.cm, 9 ft.lbf).

The air cleaner cap sub-assembly, the air cleaner filter element, and the air cleaner case sub-assembly.

Disconnect the starter connector, open the terminal cap to remove the nut and starter wire, and then take out the 2 bolts securing the starter.

Perform initialization.

With 2 bolts, torqued to 7.0 N.m (71 kgf.cm, 62 in.lbf).

Install the battery.

Use snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring and plate washer, then extract the starter armature from the commutator end frame.

Torque the air cleaner assembly to 5.0 Nm (51 kgf.cm, 44 in.lbf).

Torqued to 5.0 N.m (51 kgf.cm, 44 in.lbf).
