2005 Toyota Solara Starter Motor Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the starter motor on 2005 Toyota Solara?
A: Start by disconnecting the lead wire then unscrewing the two securing screws of the magnetic switch assembly from the starter drive housing before removing both the spring and plunger. Take out the starter field frame assembly by removing its two through-bolts to extract the field frame and commutator end frame combined unit before disassembling them. You must first remove the armature starter plate from the field frame then separate the starter commutator end frame cover by using a screwdriver. To access the starter armature assembly remove the snap ring and plate washer using snap ring pliers before taking out the armature from the commutator end frame. Start with the starter drive housing where you will remove its three planetary gears. Then inspect the magnetic switch assembly through three tests: check plunger return function and measure terminal 50 to C pull-in coil resistance (winner: below 1 ohm) and terminal 50 to switch body hold-in coil resistance (standard: below 2 ohm). The starter armature inspection process includes measuring commutator segment resistance at less than 1 ohm (standard), checking for grounding by testing commutator-core resistance at 10 k ohm or higher and performing surface cleaning if necessary and measuring the commutator length within standard specifications of 3.1 to 3.8 mm. The starter commutator end frame assembly requires measurement of brush length for specified length: 4.0 to 9.0 mm and brush insulation resistance testing between positive and negative brushes (standard: 10 k ohm or higher). Check the clutch performance by turning the clutch pinion gear counterclockwise until it moves freely and verify its locking ability when rotated clockwise. The installation of planetary gears requires a grease application to the gears along with the pin components before insertion of the three planetary elements. Apply grease to the plate washer and armature shaft before installing the armature into the commutator end frame. Use a new snap ring to secure it following measurement of its length (not exceeding 5.0 mm). First install the starter commutator end frame cover then put the armature plate inside the starter field frame while aligning the keyway with the key before installing the starter plate. To install the starter commutator end frame assembly align the rubber piece to the field frame cutout before filling the field frame assembly that should align with the starter drive housing using two through bolts secured with 6.0 Nm torque. Plunge the hook onto the drive lever and install the plunger and return spring afterward. Secure the magnetic switch with two screws (7.5 Nm torque) while wire the lead with a nut (torque of 10 Nm).
