2006 Toyota Solara Radiator Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the radiator on 2006 Toyota Solara?
A: The radiator removal starts with draining engine coolant followed by removing the radiator reserve tank hose or pipe and both radiator hose inlet together with outlet. The technician should adjust oil cooler outlet hose No.2 (A/T) prior to removing oil cooler outlet hose No.3 (A/T). After removing the air cleaner inlet assembly by unbolting its 2 pieces the following step is to take apart the radiator support upper section. This procedure starts by disconnecting the 2 horn connectors then removing the hood lock release lever cover followed by unbolting both the radiator support and its 4 bolts. Use a screwdriver to disconnect the fan motor connector followed by radiator assembly removal from the body, then free the radiator support lower including the fan assembly by unfastening the 3 bolts. Special Service Tool: 09230-01010 (09231-01010, 09231-01030) needs assembly by installing the claw onto the overhaul handle and tightening the stopper bolt to achieve a dimension B measurement between 0.2 to 0.3 mm (0.008 to 0.012 inch). When using the same tool to demold the caulking release the radiator tank upper and lower segments through delicate shaft tapping of the bracket with a soft-faced hammer before extracting the O-ring. You must remove the cooler pipe from the automatic transaxle oil cooler assembly before loosening its 2 nuts with 2 plate washers and extracting the oil cooler together with the 2 O-rings. New O-rings must be installed onto the lower tank and oil cooler contact surfaces before the oil cooler is secured to the lower tank by plate washers and nuts tightened to 8.3 Nm (85 kgf-cm, 73 inch lbs.). The radiator tank upper and lower installation includes a check for foreign objects in the lock plate groove and proper positioning of the new O-ring prior to securing the cooler pipe with 14.7 Nm torque (150 kgf-cm, 11 ft lbs.). Apply a soft-faced hammer to check if the lock plate has spaced gaps throughout. Adjust Special Service Tool: 09230-01010, 09231-14010 by turning the stopper bolt to reach 8.4 mm (0.331 inch) B dimension before using the tool to caulk the lock plate while checking for damage to the pipes, brackets, or tank ribs. The measurement of lock plate height H should range from 7.40 to 7.80 mm (0.2913 to 0.3071 inch) after caulking and adjustment might be necessary. The drain plug needs a new O-ring installation followed by tightening the securement. The installation begins with attaching the radiator fan to its location through 3 bolts that need torque setting to 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.). Next, mount the entire radiator assembly to the body and link the fan motor connector. Reconnect the 2 horn connectors before installing the air cleaner inlet assembly with 2 bolts at 5.0 Nm torques (51 kgf cm or 44 inch lbs). Then adjust the hood sub-assembly and check for leaks while adding engine coolant.
