2006 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the rear Wheel Hub and Wheel Bearing on 2006 Toyota RAV4?
A: First service or repair work on the rear wheel hub and bearing needs the operator to begin by taking off the rear wheel while disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal and waiting 90 seconds to avoid Air Bag and seat belt pretensioner activation. You can use Special Service Tool: 09930-00010 alongside a hammer to unstake the 4WD rear wheel shaft nut while avoiding drive shaft screw damage by fully loosening the nut. Start by extracting the rear disk brake cylinder assembly LH, rear disc balance with the skid control sensor wire (for 2WD) and rear speed sensor LH (for 4WD) and finally all parts leading to the rear suspension No. 1 arm assembly LH and rear shock absorber assembly LH as you detach it with two bolts. Proceed to remove the rear wheel hub and bearing assembly LH; 2WD needs the four bolts removal along with the assembly and the magnet rotor side must remain clear of foreign matter during the operation. Mark the drive shaft and wheel hub and bearing of the 4WD before removing the four bolts with caution toward the magnet rotor side. The procedure for installation calls for attaching the rear wheel hub and bearing assembly LH while 2WD models require four bolts torqued to 90 Nm (918 kgf-cm, 68 ft. lbs.) and 4WD models demand shaft spline alignment for four bolt assembly installation at the same torque value. First connect the rear shock absorber assembly LH with two bolts and then install both the skid control sensor wire (for 2WD) and rear speed sensor LH (for 4WD) followed by installing the rear suspension No. 1 arm assembly LH, but only temporarily. To complete this step install the rear disc but first place the rear brake cylinder assembly LH followed by torquing the rear wheel shaft nut on 4WD vehicles with a new hub nut at 216 Nm (2,203 kgf-cm, 159 ft. lbs.). Then stake the hub nut with a chisel and hammer for additional security. Deinstall the rear wheel first and torque it up to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Next stabilize the suspension then tighten the front shock absorber assembly LH and rear suspension No. 1 arm assembly LH. Check the rear wheel alignment before reconnecting the cable to the negative battery terminal and inspecting the speed sensor signal.
