2006 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Rack And Pinion on 2006 Toyota RAV4?
A: The process of rack and pinion maintenance starts with steering the wheels directly forward while removing the negative battery cable for at least 90 seconds to disable the Air Bags. First disconnect the tie rod end sub-assembly of the left side by removing its cotter pin and castle nut and utilizing Special Service Tool: 09628-62011 to separate it from the steering knuckle without damaging the dust cover. The process should be duplicated for the right side tie rod end. To begin the procedure you need to remove the column hole cover silencer sheet through removal of the floor carpet together with the two clips. The seat belt will securely fix the steering wheel to protect the spiral cable, and you should apply matchmarks to the sliding yoke of the steering intermediate shaft before removing the bolt to disconnect the sliding yoke. To detach the No. 1 steering column hole cover sub-assembly remove clip A then detach clip B while avoiding damage to the clips. The engine assembly with transaxle should be removed for the following step to disconnect the column hole cover from the rack and pinion. Initiate placematchmarking procedure on the steering intermediate shaft before you remove the attaching bolt and separate the shaft from the rack and pinion. Detach the rack and pinion assembly by removing two bolts and two nuts from the suspension crossmember while preventing the nut from rotational movement when tightening the bolt. The first step for installation involves mounting the rack and pinion assembly onto the front suspension crossmember with two bolts and two nuts before applying torque at 138 Nm (1407 kgf-cm, 102 ft. lbs.) and avoiding nut rotation. Fix the matchmarks before inserting the intermediate shaft onto the rack and pinion while torqueing to 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.). Place the new clamp on the No. 1 steering column hole cover before installing the engine assembly with transaxle. Install the No. 1 hole cover with clip A on the body after you ensure the mouth of clip A does not receive any damage. After matching the indicated points on the sliding yoke sub-assembly, mount it to the intermediate shaft and tighten the bolt to 35 Nm (360 kgf-cm, 26 ft. lbs.). The floor carpet installation should be followed by the column hole cover silencer sheet installation with two clips attached. The left tie rod end assembly requires connection to the steering knuckle through its castle nut which should be torqued to 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.) before installation of a new cotter pin completes the procedure. The right side receives identical handling. Front wheel installation should be done with a 103 Nm torque while completing the battery cable connection to the negative terminal before setting front wheels parallel and performing final wheel alignment inspection.
