2006 Toyota RAV4 Steering Column Cover Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service the steering column cover on 2006 Toyota RAV4?
A: Service of the steering column cover in 2006 RAV4 vehicles begins with disconnecting the negative (-) cable from the battery terminal for a minimum of 90 seconds to avoid Air Bag deployment. The removal of the steering pad requires putting front wheels straight ahead followed by unscrewing the two T30 Torx screws before gently extracting the pad while avoiding Air Bag wire harnesses tension. The disconnected procedures should begin with wires from both Air Bag connectors and the horn connector. The steps for removing the steering wheel assembly begin with detaching the nut followed by identifying matchmarks between the wheel and column and disconnecting all spiral cable connectors before applying grease to Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021) for tool removal. When removing the steering column cover start by releasing the tilt lever followed by pushing the lower cover sides inward to break the claws and removing both covers. To properly install the components you should activate both pins and claws from the covers while verifying a total gap absence. Reinstall the steering wheel assembly using correct matchmarks while screwing the nut to 50 Nm (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft-lbf) before connecting all spiral cable connectors. You should reposition the steering pad while verifying the safety of Air Bag connectors before applying 8.8 Nm force to both screws (90 kgf-cm, 78 in-lbf). Verify the SRS warning light operation by turning ignition ON after reconnecting the negative (-) battery terminal. Additional medical examinations will become necessary in case symptoms develop.
