2006 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the starter motor on 2006 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: Service and repair of the starter motor requires first starting with starter yoke assembly disassembly which includes removing the nut and lead wire from terminal C and removing the 2 through bolts to extract the starter yoke with the armature and finally eliminating the O-ring from the starter yoke. Beginning with the starter brush holder assembly you should first eliminate screws alongside O-rings and an end cover from the field frame to separate the O-ring from this frame and then gradually disconnect starter yoke brushes from the brush holder while pulling back its spring using a screwdriver until the brush detaches from its holder and finally remove the brush holder from the starter yoke. You must first withdraw the starter armature from its position inside the starter yoke for the starter armature assembly work. Magnetize your finger while you remove the steel ball from the clutch shaft hole. The procedure begins with taking out 2 screws and removing the starter housing before you remove the return spring, idler gear, clutch roller, retainer and starter clutch from the starter housing. The reassembly process begins with adding grease to every component including the steel ball and return spring alongside clutch rollers and starter idler pinions. Then add the steel ball together with a fresh O-ring to the starter housing and place the return spring within the magnet starter switch hole followed by installing the starter clutch and idler gear alongside retainer and clutch roller until securing the starter housing to the magnet switch through 2 screws at a torque of 9.3 N.m (95 kgf.cm, 82 in.lbf). To proceed with installation you must first put the starter armature on the starter yoke followed by brush holder alignment with starter yoke claw groove before placing the brush holder on the yoke then placing the 2 starter yoke brushes on the holder making sure the positive (+) leads wire remain above grounding level until installing a new O-ring on the starter yoke groove and end cover with 2 new O-rings and 2 screws tightened to 3.8 N.m (39 kgf.cm, 34 in.lbf). To finalize the repair install the starter yoke with its through bolts tightened to 9.3 N.m (95 kgf.cm, 82 in.lbf) after setting the protrusion of the starter yoke into the magnetic switch groove.
