2006 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2006 Toyota Corolla?
A: Start power steering pump service by taking off the right-front wheel then pulling out power steering fluid. Start by taking off the engine under cover from the right-hand side followed by removing both 1ZZ-FE and 2ZZ-GE engine types fan and generator V belts. Remove the power steering pump hose No.1 clip then disconnect the pressure feed tube assembly using Special Service Tool 09023-12901 by removing its bolt. Take off the bolt from the vane pump bracket to release it plus detach the vane pump unit after freeing the oil pressure switch connector and the 2 bolts and 2 nuts. Install the vane pump assembly in the vise using Special Service Tool 09630-00014 and then disconnect the power steering suction port union by removing bolt and O-ring. You must first extract the flow control valve parts including pressure port union and O-ring until you reach the valve itself. Because the oil pressure switch is faulty you must replace it. You can take out the w/pulley shaft sub-assembly by lifting 2 screwdrivers to disengage the snap ring from the housing rear after removing its 4 bolts and O-ring. Following these steps take out the ten vanes and vane pump rotor assembly while removing both front side and housing O-rings. Using a screwdriver withdraw the housing oil seal while maintaining the housing front intact. Verify the space between the vane pump shaft and bush in the housing front that should stay below 0.043 mm (0.0017 inch) for proper oil flow. You should check the vane pump plates for thickness between 1.405 to 1.411 millimeters (0.0553 to 0.0556 inch) and measure the space between the vane pump rotor groove and vane plates to stay under 0.025 millimeters (0.0010 inch). Put power steering fluid on the flow control valve before placing it into the hole and use compressed air to test for leaks. Take the extension of the compression spring which needs to be at minimum 1.453 inch (36.9 mm). When the pressure port union becomes defective install a new vane pump assembly. Install a housing oil seal coated with power steering fluid using Special Service Tools 09950-60010 and 09950-70010 together with a press to place the seal in the correct direction. Put power steering fluid on the housing front bushing and gently push the w/pulley shaft sub-assembly into place while avoiding oil seal damage. Place the front side plate over its components while adding O-rings dipped in power steering fluid to achieve their correct placement. Set the vane pump cam ring on top with an inscription showing and add its parts in order starting with the vane pump rotor then 10 vane plates facing outwards. Set a new snap ring onto the w/pulley shaft sub-assembly first and then lubricate an O-ring with brand new power steering fluid. Insert the O-ring onto the housing rear while placing the housing rear in proper position and tightening its 4 bolts at 22 Nm (224 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.). Measure and check the pump's free spinning motion without loud sounds and test the pulley's rotating torque that should not exceed 0.27 Nm. Add the oil pressure switch to the vane pump and tighten it to 21 Nm. Apply power steering fluid to the compression spring and flow control valve before placing them in position on the pressure port union. Torque the union to 69 Nm after inserting a new O-ring. Put power steering fluid on a new O-ring before placing it on the power steering suction port union. Fasten the bolt afterward and tighten it to 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm). Fasten the vane pump assembly by tightening two bolts to 37 Nm torque rating. Attach the oil pressure switch connector properly without exposing the connector to oil. Plug the pressure feed tube assembly into the vane pump bracket rear by first using Special Service Tool 09023-12901 and torquing to 41 Nm (418 kgf-cm, 30 ft. lbs.). Keep the torque wrench parallel with the tool. Hold the pressure feed tube clamp to the bolt then tighten until it reaches 7.8 Nm (80 kgf-cm, 69 inch lbs.) torque. Next, connect the oil reservoir with pump hose No.1 using a fasteners clip. Reassemble the ventilation system fan and generator V belt before filling power steering liquid and conducting system bleeding. Inspect for leaks and install the engine under cover on the right side. Finally place the right-front wheel and tighten nuts to 76 ft-lbs. (103 Nm).
