2005 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the rear LH Leaf Spring assembly on 2005 Toyota Tacoma?
A: Start the repair process of the rear LH spring assembly by detaching 4WD and Pre Runner drive type rear wheel and spare tire assemblies. The support of the rear axle housing begins the process of removing the shock absorber assembly from the rear LH by uninstalling the bolt with its corresponding nut and washer but applying different methods for 2WD by detaching from the rear spring seat and 4WD and Pre Runner configurations by detaching from the rear axle housing. The step involves dismantling the parking brake cable assembly No.3 through bolt removal and cable separation. The procedure for 2WD begins with disassembly of the rear spring bumper No.1 LH by removing both nuts before proceeding to the rear spring U-bolt removal that requires the 4 nuts and 4 washers until the spring seat and 2 U-bolts can be taken out. Both vehicle models require repeating U-bolt removal in addition to taking away the spring bumper. Before removing the rear LH spring assembly secure a nut followed by washer and through bolt without letting the spring drop to the floor. Extract sub-assembly No.2 of the rear spring shackle by unfastening its nut together with washer and through bolt and shackle. Secure the spring in a vise then cut both bushes before using Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00350), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) and a press to extract the bushes followed by hammering out the outer tubes with a chisel. The installation of 2 new bushes requires Special Service Tool: 09710-28012 (09710-07062), 09710-30041 (09710-03211) and a press. The rear spring shackle sub-assembly No.2 requires installation with the through bolt and washer and nut before inserting the rear LH spring assembly into the rear axle housing and aligning the hole with the spring center bolt head position. Finally, install the through bolts, washers, and nuts. The 2WD installation requires placing the spring seat followed by two U-bolts and four washers and four nuts which should be tightened to 50 Nm (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft. lbs.). Maintain equal lengths of U-bolts beneath the spring seat. To install the components on 4WD and Pre Runner models use the spring bumper, spring seat and 2 U-bolts with 4 washers and 4 nuts according to a torque value of 50 Nm (510 kgf-cm, 37 ft. lbs.). Ensure all U-bolts maintain equal lengths. First, install the two nuts on the rear spring bumper No.1 LH with 15 Nm (153 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.) torque. Then attach the parking brake cable assembly No.3 with its bolt secured by 12.5 Nm (127 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) torque. The shock absorber assembly rear LH requires installation of bolt and nut alongside washer before fitting the rear wheel with torque setting at 113 Nm (1,152 kgf-cm, 83 ft. lbs.). When completing the procedure, stabilize the suspension then fully tighten all rear suspension nuts before reinstalling the 4WD or Pre Runner drive type spare tire.
