2005 Toyota Sequoia Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the timing belt on 2005 Toyota Sequoia?
A: Three essential steps exist to remove the timing belt which include separating the engine under cover while draining engine coolant until removing the radiator assembly. Choose to start by removing the throttle body cover followed by the intake air connector assembly while continuing with the drive belt and fan and fluid coupling and fan pulley removal through the necessary steps of loosening the four nuts from the fluid coupling to fan bracket. Securely suspend the PS pump by taking out 3 bolt connections. Proceed to remove the drive belt idler pulley after disassembly of pulley bolt then cover plate and idler pulley. The RH No.3 timing belt cover removal requires disassembly of three bolts and one nut before proceeding to remove the LH No.3 timing belt cover through engine wire disconnection from two clamps and bolt and nut removal along with disconnecting the sensor wire and connector followed by complete removal of the cover and its bolt and nut and oil cooler pipe. The removal process begins with taking 2 bolts off the No.2 timing belt cover after detaching the A/C compressor from its engine position then finishing with removing the fan bracket using 2 bolts and 2 nuts. Before reusing the timing belt check that you can see three installation marks when turning the crankshaft pulley; add new marks if necessary before taking removal steps. To remove the crankshaft pulley bolt the technician must use Special Service Tools - 09213-70011 (90105-08076) and 09330-00021 while aligning the timing mark "0" on the No.1 timing belt cover with the crankshaft pulley groove during the process of setting the No.1 cylinder to TDC/compression state. After proper alignment the technician must not rotate the crankshaft pulley prior to removing the pulley bolt. To remove the timing belt tensioner install new marks when using the same timing belt. After that disconnect it from the camshaft timing pulleys and the tension spring while using Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000). Use the previous special tool to hold the camshaft timing pulleys before unfastening their 4 bolts. Remove the generator and drive belt tensioner and crankshaft pulley using Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05011). Avoid rotating the crankshaft pulley at any time. Initiate removal of the No.1 timing belt cover and timing belt guide and timing belt and transfer new installation marks in case of belt reuse. The technician will use a 10 mm hexagon wrench to remove No.1 idler pulley and No.2 idler pulley. Check the timing belt for defects along with the idler pulleys for oil leakage and their smooth function and examine the timing belt tensioner for both oil leakage and normal push rod operation. Check the water pump condition. Begin installation of the crankshaft timing pulley by aligning the set key with the key groove then tap it into place using Special Service Tool: 09223-46011. Apply adhesive to the pivot bolts of No.1 and No.2 idler pulleys before installation so they move without impedance. Before permanent installation of the timing belt you must first maintain engine temperature below 80 degrees Fahrenheit while keeping surfaces clean until installation of the timing belt cover spacer followed by timing belt guide and No.1 timing belt cover. After installing the drive belt tensioner complete the procedure by checking the crankshaft pulley position. Let both timing pulleys of the LH and RH camshaft receive the installation of the timing belt maintaining a clean operating environment. The timing belt tensioner setup requires users to push the push rod and tighten it with a hexagon wrench before installing the tensioner. Use Special Service Tools that include 09213-70011 (90119-08216), 09330-00021 to check valve timing after confirming the crankshaft pulley position using the timing marks clearing. Securely place the fan bracket, A/C compressor together with the No.2 timing belt cover, RH No.3 timing belt cover, and LH No.3 timing belt cover on their designated positions. The final installation steps involve assembling the drive belt idler pulley, PS pump and fan pulley, fan and fluid coupling and drive belt. This is followed by intake air connector assembly together with throttle body cover and radiator assembly. The vehicle requires engine coolant addition before starting the engine to look for leaks. Then check the coolant level before engine under cover installation.
