2005 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install a water pump on 2005 Toyota RAV4?
A: The first step to remove the water pump requires draining the engine coolant followed by drive belt removal. Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-00600) helps users remove the 4 bolts combined with the pump pulley. Use a screwdriver to detach the crankshaft position sensor wire clamp and remove the wire from the pump afterward. Subsequently disassemble the 4 bolts and 2 nuts along with the wire clamp and water pump itself. The water pump removal needs gentle prying along the cylinder block interface to separate the components which must avoid damage to the contact surfaces. Before installation remove any existing packing (FIPG) through razor blade and gasket scraper techniques then wash all parts thoroughly and apply the non-residue solvent to sealing surfaces. The installation requires application of Part No. 08826-00100 or equivalent seal packing with a 2.2 to 2.5 mm (0.09 to 0.10 inch) opening to the water pump followed by immediate part assembly within five minutes. Install the water pump with its clamp by engaging the four bolts and two nuts and torque them to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.) before attaching the crankshaft position sensor wire harness clamp and wire. Install the pump pulley by using Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-00600) along with the four bolts which need to be torqued to 26 Nm (265 kgf-cm, 19 ft. lbs.). The final steps involve driving in the belt before adding coolant before starting the engine to inspect for leaks then checking the coolant amount.
