2005 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the thermostat on 2005 Toyota RAV4?
A: A service on the thermostat needs you to start by draining the engine coolant followed by drive belt and generator removal. The service starts with taking off both nuts and the water inlet followed by removing the thermostat itself and lastly the gasket. Perform the inspection by heating water to gradually warm the thermostat in which a proper valve opening temperature should range between 80 to 84 degrees Celsius (176 to 183.2 degrees Fahrenheit); otherwise change the thermostat. Validating a thermostat requires measuring its valve lift at 10 mm (0.39 inch) at 95 degrees Celsius (203 degrees Fahrenheit) while also verifying that the valve achieves complete closure below 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit); the thermostat needs replacement if any specifications are not attained. When installing the thermostat keep it inside the cylinder block with a fresh gasket and position the jiggle valve toward the upper direction with room for a 10 degrees adjustment angle. Set the 2 nuts on the water inlet and torque them to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.) before putting back the generator alongside the drive belt. First check the engine coolant level and then begin the engine for leak inspection before performing another engine coolant level check.
