2005 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Timing Chain SUB-ASSEMBLY on 2005 Toyota Prius?
A: First remove the oil pump assembly together with its oil pump seal before starting to replace the CHAIN SUB-ASSEMBLY (1NZ-FXE). Position No. 1 cylinder at TDC/compression by installing the washer onto a crankshaft bolt then fastening the bolt onto the crankshaft through clockwise crankshaft rotation as shown in the illustration. Begin chain sub-assembly removal by first dismantling the chain tensioner which requires lifting the stopper plate and unlocking the plunger during which you should push it to the end before locking it and inserting a 3.0 mm (0.118 inch) diameter bar into the stopper plate hole. A complete lift of the stopper plate requires you to unlock and slightly pull out the plunger. Start by removing the two bolts on top and the chain tensioner before extracting the chain tensioner slipper. Complete the process by removing the two remaining bolts holding the chain vibration damper and finally extract the chain. To install the timing chain ensure you correctly place the timing marks without turning the crankshaft when the chain tensioner is separated. When operating the camshaft without the chain it requires turning the crankshaft 40 deg counterclockwise from TDC/compression. Insert the chain starting from the crankshaft timing sprocket and keep the timing mark at the mark plate while tying the chain to stop the wheels from getting misaligned. Wind up the chain tensioner stopper after torquing two bolts to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.) value. The installation process also requires removal of the string along with the chain vibration damper. To secure the chain tensioner properly lift the stopper plate unlock the plunger then push it to the end lock it and insert a 3.0 mm (0.118 inch) diameter bar through the stopper plate hole. You must install the chain tensioner using two bolts which need 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.) torque and drop the 3.0 mm (0.118 inch) diameter bar after. Insert the oil pump seal by using Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00250, 09951-00380, 09952-06010) and 09950-70010 (09951-07100) followed by assembly installation of the oil pump.
