2005 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft (RH or LH) on 2005 Toyota Prius?
A: The replacement process for a camshaft (RH or LH, 1NZ-FXE) starts with taking off rear floor board No.2 along with the deck floor box rear and the rear floor board No.3. Begin the repair by disconnecting battery power then take off the engine under cover RH and windshield wiper link assembly and cowl top panel sub-assembly outer front and the radiator support opening cover followed by the air cleaner assembly. Start by suspending the brake master cylinder reservoir then remove its bracket and subsequently detach the cylinder head cover sub-assembly. Align the timing mark notch of the crankshaft damper at "0" position during TDC/compression by turning it clockwise to verify the camshaft timing gear marks. Drive an 8 mm socket hexagon wrench through Special Service Tool: 09023-38401 to remove the service hole screw plug after marking timing chain plates according to camshaft timing gear marks. Drive a screwdriver through the service hole of the chain tensioner to pinch the stopper plate up and rotate camshaft No. 2 hexagonal lobe right using a wrench until the plunger extends then remove the screwdriver while maintaining the wrench position. Use Special Service Tool: 09023-38401 to slowen the bolt while keeping the adjustable wrench in place while securing the 3.0 mm (0.118 inch) diameter bar in the stopper plate hole through tape. The mechanic must perform bearing cap removal in order starting with No. 1 and No. 2 and then slightly elevate camshaft No. 2 to extract it with its timing gear. Put the camshaft timing gear assembly and vise together for clamping yet protect the gear from harm while applying vinyl tape over the oil paths then puncturing the tape followed by air pressure of 150 kPa (1.5 kgf/cm2). First verify that the camshaft timing gear assembly turns in advance direction before removing the bolt and camshaft timing gear assembly while keeping the other four bolts in their places. When installing the camshaft timing gear assembly maintain it in alignment with the camshaft then rotate it leftward by pushing lightly while ensuring no clearance occurs before applying the bolt to 64 Nm (653 kgf-cm, 47 ft. lbs.). Place engine oil on the cam and cylinder head journal then attach the chain before mounting the camshaft with camshaft timing gear assembly while ensuring proper alignment of paint mark to timing mark. Use Special Service Tool: 09023-38401 to tighten bolt No. 2 on camshaft No. 2 by applying 64 Nm torque after first securing bearing caps No. 1 and No. 2 to proper torques and holding the hexagonal lobe on camshaft No. 2. Tighten the service hole screw plug bolt after applying adhesive to its end. Then install it clockwise following a torque of 15 Nm (153 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.). Finally, inspect and adjust valve clearance using Special Service Tool 10514, 09023-38400, install the cylinder head cover sub-assembly, reservoir bracket (8.5 Nm), brake master cylinder reservoir sub-assembly (8.5 Nm), air cleaner assembly (7.0 Nm for bolt, 3.0 Nm for clamp), cowl top panel sub-assembly outer front, windshield wiper link assembly, check for engine oil leaks, and install the radiator support opening cover, engine under cover RH, reconnect the battery negative terminal (6.0 Nm), and reinstall the rear floor boards and deck floor box rear before initializing the power window control system.
