2006 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the timing chain on 2006 Toyota Prius?
A: Service of the timing chain starts by removing the rear No. 2 floor board along with the rear deck floor box and rear No. 3 floor board. Then disconnect the negative battery terminal cable which requires a minimum 90-second waiting period to avoid Air Bag activation. The first service steps involve removing the radiator support opening cover followed by front wheels and subsequent removal of No. 3 engine under cover, No. 4 center engine under cover and draining engine coolant and oil. The wiper arm head cap with both front wiper arms must also be detached. Begin sequence by loosening the clamp on the air intake meter connector, then proceed to remove the hood to cowl top seal, cowl top ventilator louvers from both LH and RH sides and windshield motor with wiper link assembly, front cowl top panel outer, and air cleaner assembly. Disassemble the procedure by removing the No. 2 air cleaner inlet while disconnecting the brake master cylinder reservoir followed by removing reservoir bracket and windshield washer jar assembly. The following steps require the usage of Special Service Tools: 09213-58013 (91111-50845) and 09330-00021 for holding the crankshaft pulley during bolt loosening and for removing the cylinder head cover and purge VSV and drive belt and water pump and crankshaft pulley. A jack supports the oil pan before removal of engine mounting insulator RH along with engine mounting spacer and engine mounting bracket. You need to disconnect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly together with the crankshaft position sensor before removing the timing chain cover and oil pump seal. The mechanic will begin by positioning the No. 1 engine cylinder at TDC/compression before removing the chain tensioner followed by its slipper and vibration damper and chain. The No. 1 cylinder position needs to be set at 20 degrees ATDC for installation steps. Installation requires setting the position of the No. 1 cylinder at 20° ATDC before installing the chain vibration damper while aligning timing marks and installing the chain tensioner slipper and tensioner with correct sprocket tension between the camshaft timing sprockets. The repair process includes installation of the oil pump seal followed by the timing chain cover then crankshaft position sensor and camshaft timing oil control valve assembly and engine mounting bracket which comes after engine mounting spacer and engine mounting insulator RH installation. Torque all bolts to their specified values during this step. The procedure requires the installation of the crankshaft pulley with Special Service Tool: 09213-58013 (91111-50845), 09330-00021 followed by water pump and drive belt installation and drive belt tension confirmation. Secure all connections while re-installing the purge VSV alongside the cylinder head cover with packing and seal, the windshield washer jar and its reservoir bracket and brake master cylinder reservoir. Conclude the installation with the No. 2 air cleaner inlet followed by the air cleaner assembly and front cowl top panel outer, windshield wiper motor with wiper link assembly, cowl top ventilator louvers and hood to cowl top seal before adding both front wiper arms and wiper arm head caps. The procedure includes adding engine oil and coolant and connecting the cable to the negative battery terminal followed by reinstallation of the rear floor boards and leak test for coolant and finally initialization for specific systems when the battery is reconnected.
