2005 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you overhaul the front Axle Shaft on 2005 Toyota Prius?
A: Drain all transaxle oil using a #10 socket hexagon wrench followed by addition of fresh gasket to the drain plug area before tightening it to 39 Nm (400 kgf-cm, 29 ft. lbs.). The front wheel and front axle hub LH nut require Special Service Tool: 09930-00010 and a hammer to unstake it and finally a 30 mm socket wrench to extract it. Unplug the speed sensor front LH by removing its bolt and disconnecting it from both the shock absorber assembly and steering knuckle without allowing any foreign material to stick to the sensor. To separate the tie rod end sub-assembly LH one should first remove both the clip and castle nut before disconnecting the component from the steering knuckle using Special Service Tool: 09628-00011 while preventing damage to other nearby parts. Separate the front lower ball joint LH on the front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No.1 LH by unlatching the two nuts and bolt before pushing the assembly downward. The front axle assembly LH separation from the front drive shaft assembly LH is completed using a plastic hammer with possible assistance from a brass bar. Extract the front drive shaft assembly LH by first removing the front fender apron seal before using Special Service Tool: 09520-01010, 09520-24010 (09520-32040) to safely remove it. The procedures to extract the front drive shaft assembly RH involve performing the same steps. Special Service Tool: 09608-16042 (09608-02021, 09608-02041) should be used to fix the LH front axle assembly because it prevents hub bearing damage. The LH assembly of front drive shaft needs inspection for loose parts and leakage as well as damage identification. Remove inboard joint boot clamps of each boot and set the inboard joint boot apart from the LH inboard joint assembly before cleaning the inboard and outboard joint assemblies and making marks before disconnecting them. Apply the snap ring expander to the INN LH front drive inner shaft snap ring before extracting the tripod joint with utmost care toward the roller position. Follow proper order when installing new parts while checking for alignment and clearance and fill the specified amount of grease which is between 125 to 135 grams. Finally complete the operation by securing all fasteners according to torque specifications and add and inspect transaxle oil while adjusting the front wheel alignment and checking the ABS speed sensor signal.
