2006 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the axle shaft assembly on 2006 Toyota Prius?
A: A 10 mm hexagon socket wrench will drain the transaxle oil to service and repair the front drive shaft assembly where you should install a new gasket after removing the drain plug before tightening to 39 Nm (400 kgf-cm, 29 ft. lbs.). We will start the repair by unstaking the front axle hub nut LH using Special Service Tool: 09930-00010 along with a hammer while protecting the front drive shaft LH threads rather than using a 30 mm socket wrench to remove the nut. To disconnect the front speed sensor LH the technician follows three steps including unbolting the sensor and disconnecting wire and hose clamp which leads to sensor removal from steering knuckle. Detach the tie rod end sub-assembly LH with Special Service Tool: 09628-00011 while maintaining protection of the dust cover and steering knuckle. The lower LH side of the No. 1 front suspension arm sub-assembly requires bolt and nut removal while pushing the arm downwards to detach its front lower ball joint. You should separate the front axle assembly LH by using a plastic-faced hammer to tap the front drive shaft end until it disengages without harming the outboard joint boot or speed sensor rotor. Remove the front fender apron seal first before using Special Service Tool: 09520-01010, 09520-24010 (09520-32040) to detach the shaft without damaging its oil seal or boot. Copy the process used to remove the front drive shaft assembly during the RH assembly procedure. The front axle assembly LH requires the support of Special Service Tool: 09608-16042 (09608-02021, 09608-02041) if needed. Detect any loose, cracked or greasy indications on the front drive shaft assembly LH. The disassembly process starts with removing the No. 2 front axle inboard joint boot clamp LH using either a flat-head screwdriver or needle-nose pliers before you disconnect the inboard joint boot and take out the front drive inboard joint assembly LH while marking the joints to prevent vise over-tightening. Follow the same sequence for the RHS when using Special Service Tool: 09950-00020 to remove the LH front drive shaft dust cover. Use Special Service Tool: 09527-10011 to inset the new front drive shaft dust cover LH correctly then perform the same procedure for the RH side. Insert the front drive shaft hole snap ring on the left-hand side followed by the outer joint boot and apply specified grease to both components. Secure the No. 2 front axle outboard joint boot clamp LH until it reaches a standard clearance of 0.8 mm (0.031 inch) or less. Then do the same for the other outboard joint boot clamp LH. Mount the front drive shaft damper RH along with its corresponding drive shaft damper setting clamp after achieving correct alignment to secure them in position. Determine matchmarks for the front drive inboard joint assembly LH while filling it with specified grease before installation. Hazard-free installation of the front axle inboard joint boot requires both inboard joint boot clamps to be properly placed. Install the front drive shaft assembly LH by applying ATF to the spline in addition to correct alignment of the parts before a careful insertion and finishing with the front axle assembly LH and connecting components including the No. 1 front suspension arm sub-assembly lower LH and tie rod end sub-assembly LH and front speed sensor LH and front axle hub nut LH while observing torque specifications. The procedure mandates reinstalling the front wheel and adding transaxle oil while inspecting it prior to performing a front wheel alignment check and verifying the ABS speed sensor signal.
