2005 Toyota Matrix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the starter motor on 2005 Toyota Matrix?
A: The starting procedure requires magnet switch body removal through wire disconnecting and screw unfastening from the housing of the starter drive. Then separate the magnet switch and return spring with plunger from the assembly. Disassemble the starter yoke assembly first by removing two through bolts while pulling the starter yoke with the starter commutator end frame that can then be separated from the frame. Start by removing the starter armature plate from the starter yoke using correct tools followed by the starter commutator end frame cover using a screwdriver. Install snap ring pliers before removing the snap ring from the starter commutator end frame. Deduct the washer and starter armature from this frame. The starter center bearing clutch and its accompanying starter drive lever set pin need to be removed when the three planetary gears are extracted from the starter drive housing. The pin from the starter drive lever set must be removed from the starter center bearing clutch. The operator must evaluate the magnet switch body for proper functioning and resistance levels between terminals 50 and C which should align with 1 Ohm or lower while terminal 50 to switch body should be 2.0 Ohm or lower; exchange the unit if these requirements are not met. The commutator segments of the armature assembly must display 1 Ohm or lower resistance between them while no resistance should exist between the commutator and armature coil core (they should be greater than 10 kOhm); replacements are required if these standards are not achieved. Vernier calipers should be used to measure commutator depth whereas any depths exceeding 3.8 mm (0.150 in.) require a new starter armature. Check resistance between positive and negative brushes in the starter commutator end frame assembly because replacing the frame becomes necessary when measured resistance falls below 10 kOhms. Check the function of the starter center bearing clutch sub-assembly by ensuring the clutch pinion gear freely spins in one direction but stops turning in the opposite direction; perform replacement if needed and inspect tooth damage on the gears. The starter drive lever set pin must go into the starter center bearing clutch prior to installing the starter center bearing clutch into the starter drive housing. All the starter center bearing clutch planetary gear pins should be treated with grease before fixing the three planetary gears into position. The starter armature assembly gets seated into the starter commutator end frame through the addition of a new snap ring and a check for snap ring length, which must not surpass 5.0 mm (0.197 in.). Place the starter commutator end frame cover before adding the starter armature plate which needs to be placed into the keyway area of the starter yoke. Position the starter commutator end frame assembly correctly with the starter yoke before fitting the starter yoke assembly to the starter drive housing by tightening two through bolts to 6.0 N.m (61 kgf.cm, 53 in.lbf). Following the procedure continue by adding grease to both plunger and hook and place the hook onto the starter drive lever set pin. Insert plunger while adding spring then fasten magnet switch with two screws at 7.5 N.m (76 kgf.cm, 66 in.lbf) torque settings along with connecting lead wire to terminal C through nut application at 10 N.m (102 kgf.cm, 7 ft.lbf).
