2005 Toyota Corolla Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Replace the Crankshaft Seal in an Engine on 2005 Toyota Corolla?
A: The replacement of the ENGINE REAR OIL SEAL (1ZZ-FE) starts with removing the MANUAL TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY and AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY. Using Special Service Tools 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to prevent crankshaft movement, remove the 8 bolts successive in order to remove the CLUTCH COVER ASSEMBLY, CLUTCH DISC ASSEMBLY and FLYWHEEL SUB-ASSEMBLY. The Drive Plate and Ring Gear Sub-Assembly removal steps are also applicable for the AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE installation process. The procedure to remove the ENGINE REAR OIL SEAL requires cutting the seal lip with a knife followed by using a tape-wrapped screwdriver for prying it out under inspection for crankshaft damage and subsequent sanding if required with 400-grit sandpaper. For installing the new oil seal apply multi-purpose grease to its lip before tapping it smoothly into the rear oil seal retainer edge using Special Service Tool: 09223-15020 (09951-07100). Insert the DRIVE PLATE & RING GEAR SUB-ASSEMBLY with the crankshaft stabilized by Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) before cleaning bolts and bolt holes, applying adhesive (Part No. 09330-00070, THREE BOND or equivalent) to 2 or 3 bolt threads and uniformly tightening the bolts to 88 Nm (897 kgf-cm, 65 ft. lbs.). Reinstall the FLYWHEEL SUB-ASSEMBLY through the same process while tightening the bolts to 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.) and marking them for paint before tightening them 90 degrees sequence for paint mark verification. Install the CLUTCH DISC ASSEMBLY using Special Service Tool: 09301-00210 as the first step followed by installing the CLUTCH COVER ASSEMBLY and then MANUAL TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY and AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY.
