• Q: How to replace the Shift Cable Assembly (ATM) on 2005 Toyota Camry?

  A: The procedure to replace the Transmission Control Cable Assembly (ATM) starts with disconnecting the battery negative terminal. Remove the instrument panel safety pad sub-assembly followed by taking out the air conditioning radiator assembly together with the air bag ECU assembly and air cleaner assembly and intake air connector sub-assembly and exhaust pipe assembly. Next, remove the transmission control cable assembly by taking out the 2 bolts and disconnecting shift cable grommet retainer No.2, removing the nut from the control shaft lever, disconnecting the control cable from the control shaft lever, removing the clip to disconnect the control cable from the control cable bracket, disconnecting the control cable from the control cable clamp, disconnecting the floor shift cable from the transmission floor shift assembly, pulling out the control cable from the body, and removing the shift cable grommet retainer No. 2. Insert the control cable into the body before installing the shift cable grommet retainer No.2 to the floor shift cable which should be placed uneven side facing up with full installation by ensuring secure claw seating. Connect the control cable to the control cable clamp before installing the control cable with its new clip to the bracket. The next step involves temporarily attaching the control cable with nuts to the control shaft lever while torquing shift cable grommet retainer No.2 with two bolts set to 4.9 Nm (50 kgf-cm, 43 inch lbs.). The final step involves mounting the exhaust pipe assembly and the air bag ECU assembly and air conditioning radiator assembly and position and check the shift lever before reinstallation of the intake air connector sub-assembly, air cleaner assembly and battery negative terminal.
