2005 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the water pump on 2005 Toyota 4Runner?
A: The first step to replace the water pump requires removal of Engine Under Cover Sub-Assembly No.1 through discharging its 4 bolts. First drain the coolant reservoir before you remove the V-bank cover together with the radiator support seal upper by taking out the 11 clips. First remove the fan and generator V belt from the vehicle by loosening the 4 fluid coupling bolts. The procedure begins by loosening the hose clamp and splitting the fan shroud hoses from the oil cooler while disconnecting the radiator reserve tank hose. Then, remove the 2 fan shroud bolts along with the radiator reserve tank bolt. The fan with fluid coupling and fan shroud can be separated by removing their 4 fluid coupling nuts before disassembling the fan pulley. The first step includes disconnecting hose No.2 before the air cleaner assembly can be removed. To access the water inlet you must first disconnect the 2 oil cooler hoses, 2 radiator hoses and 5 water by-pass hoses before removing the 5 bolts and the water inlet followed by removing its O-ring from the water outlet pipe and its gasket from the water pump. To perform the operation first remove idler pulley sub-assembly No.2 through bolt extraction of the two bolts and subsequent removal of both idler pulleys and then eliminate the generator assembly and separate the cooler compressor assembly. Take out the 17 bolts from the water pump as well as the water pump and gasket to remove both the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly and water pump assembly. Use new gaskets and install the water pump assembly with 17 retaining bolts by applying 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm) torque to the 10 mm head and 23 Nm (235 kgf-cm) torque to the 12 mm head. Reinstall the V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly and cooler compressor assembly and generator assembly before placing idler pulley sub-assembly No.2 and tightening it with the 2 bolts at 39 Nm (398 kgf-cm, 29 ft. lbs.). Place new gaskets and new O-rings on the water outlet and water pump before attaching the water inlet with 5 bolts which must be fastened to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.). You should proceed by connecting five water by-pass hoses together with two radiator hoses and two oil cooler hoses. Reattach the air cleaner device while connecting ventilation hose No.2 to its components. To install the fan with fluid coupling you should first install the fan pulley onto the water pump followed by assembly of fan components with fluid coupling between them. Next temporarily tighten the 4 fluid coupling nuts while you secure the 2 fan shroud bolts and radiator reserve tank bolt to 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.). Then connect the reserve tank hose and fasten the 2 oil cooler hoses with the hose clamp. You need to fully tighten the fan with fluid coupling while tightening the 4 fluid coupling bolts to 21 Nm (214 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.). Following this step, reinstall the radiator support seal upper, add engine coolant, and inspect for any leaks. Finish by installing the V-bank cover using 7.5 Nm (76 kgf-cm, 66 inch lbs.) torque value on the 2 nuts and reattaching engine under cover sub-assembly No.1 through its 4 bolts and torquing them to 29 Nm (296 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.).
