2005 Toyota 4Runner Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the exhaust pipe on 2005 Toyota 4Runner?
A: Start by removing the exhaust pipe assembly tail through unfastening its 2 bolts and removing the exhaust pipe support and tail pipe. The first step involves removing the exhaust pipe assembly center by disassembling its two bolts along with two compression springs then the four exhaust pipe supports and exhaust pipe center. To service exhaust front pipe assembly No.2 you need to remove its two bolts along with two nuts and the assembly front No. 2. First disconnect the heated oxygen sensor connector then remove the heated oxygen sensor for Bank 1 before moving on to removing the exhaust pipe assembly front through the procedure of taking off its 2 nuts. Recode Bank 2 heated oxygen procedure by disconnecting its connector and removing the sensor. Place the Bank 2 heated oxygen sensor on the exhaust pipe front. Torque it to 44 Nm (450 kgf-cm, 33 ft. lbs.) while verifying that the sensor wire stays untwisted. Also check if the sensor wire twists before reinstallation. After installing a new gasket on the exhaust manifold and front pipe you need to fasten the exhaust pipe front with 2 nuts which require a torque of 62 Nm (630 kgf-cm, 46 ft. lbs.). The exhaust pipe front receives the heated oxygen sensor for Bank 1 where technicians use a torque of 44 Nm (450 kgf-cm, 33 ft. lbs.) for installation and reconnect the sensor connector before ensuring the sensor wire is untwisted. The exhaust front pipe assembly No.2 requires two new gaskets for installation between the front pipe and exhaust manifold following tightening of two bolts and two nuts to 62 Nm (630 kgf-cm, 46 ft. lbs.) for nuts and 48 Nm (490 kgf-cm, 35 ft. lbs.) for bolts. Use a vernier caliper to measure the compression spring length. Replace it if its free length is less than 40.5 mm (1.5945 inch). The exhaust pipe assembly front needs a new gasket before tightening the center assembly bolts to 43 Nm torque (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.). Attach the tail pipe through 2 bolts while tightening them to 48 Nm (490 kgf-cm, 35 ft. lbs.) before inspecting for exhaust gas leaks.
