  • Q: How to Overhaul the Rack and Pinion in a Power Steering Link Assembly on 2005 Scion xB?
    A: The first step in power steering link assembly overhaul includes treating specified parts with either power steering fluid or molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease. First disconnect the FR wiper arms for both right-hand and left-hand sides and next remove the hood to cowl top seal and cowl top ventilator louvers for both right-hand and left-hand sides and finally take out the windshield wiper motor & link assembly and cowl panel sub-assembly. After inspecting the center front wheel the technician should remove the steering column hole cover plate while marking the sliding yoke and intermediate shaft for reference then loosen the bolt to separate the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly by applying pressure to guide the wheel with a seat belt for stability. Detach Clip A on the steering column hole cover sub-assembly No.1 followed by removing the hood sub-assembly and draining the power steering fluid. .disconnect and separate the tie rod end sub-assemblies (LH and RH) through tool 09620-62011 while removing (LH and RH) engine under covers. The procedure requires disconnecting the pressure feed tube assembly by removing the clip and return hose along with the use of Special Service Tool: 09023-12701 to remove the pressure feed and return tubes before proceeding to separate the front suspension arm sub-assemblies (lower No.1 LH and RH) using Special Service Tool: 09620-00011. Install No.1 engine hangers (Parts No.: 12281-21010) and fasten them with bolts (91642-81025) to 40 Nm (408 kgf-cm, 30 ft. lbs.) torque before using a transmission jack to hold up the front suspension crossmember sub-assembly while removing all mounting bolts. After marking the components for reassembly remove the power steering rack housing heat insulator as well as the steering column hole cover sub-assembly No.1 and steering intermediate shaft. To properly remove the power steering rack and pinion assembly begin by marking both it and the bracket No.2 then use the appropriate tools to separate the bolts, nuts, bracket No.2, grommet No.2 and eventual the assembly. Torque the bolt while engaging the fixed nut. Remove the right and left turn pressure tubes through the use of Special Service Tool: 09023-38201 while simultaneously using Special Service Tool: 09612-00012 to secure the power steering rack and pinion assembly. Afterwards uninstall the rack bush and oil seal by using Special Service Tool: 09612-24014 (09610-22011). Proceed to remove the rack steering piston ring together with the power steering rack housing oil seal utilizing Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00200, 09951-00240, 09952-06010) and a press while avoiding rack housing deformation. You should inspect the power steering rack and pinion for runout, teeth wear and damage while measuring the proper torque readings of both tie rod end sub-assemblies (LH and RH). Place the power steering rack housing oil seal followed by the rack steering piston ring then properly position all components before reinstalling them into place.
