2005 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the exhaust pipe assembly on 2005 Scion xB?
A: Service of the exhaust pipe assembly starts by removing the shift lever knob sub-assy (for manual transmission) before removing both console box and floor panel brace assembly bolts. Unfasten the bolt on the exhaust pipe assy tail and detach the clamp after disconnecting the 2 exhaust pipe supports to remove the exhaust pipe tail and gasket. Service of the exhaust pipe assy front requires disconnecting 2 heated oxygen sensor connectors followed by removing a grommet and removing 2 bolts together with 2 compression springs. To proceed you need to unfasten the 2 exhaust pipe supports after which you should remove the exhaust pipe front while you also take off the gasket that connects the exhaust manifold and the 2 heated oxygen sensors. Start with installing the exhaust pipe front assembly by torquing the two heated oxygen sensors to 44 Nm (449 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.). Apply vernier calipers to check the compression spring's free length which must be minimum 40.5 mm (1.594 inch) and replace with new springs if not at this length. Begin by using a wooden block combined with a plastic faced hammer to insert a fresh gasket properly onto the exhaust manifold until it reaches flushness while following direction requirements and refraining from gasket reuse. After connecting the exhaust pipe supports install the exhaust pipe front component followed by the two compression springs and two bolts that require 43 Nm (438 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.) torque value during installation. Reinstall the heated oxygen sensor connectors after fitting in the correct grommet. To install the exhaust pipe tail secure a new gasket onto the exhaust pipe front while connecting the 2 exhaust pipe supports and fastening the exhaust pipe tail using a clamp and bolt that requires a torque setting of 32 Nm (326 kgf-cm, 24 ft. lbs.). The technician should install the floor panel brace front at 20 Nm (199 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.) before adding the console box assy rear and the shift lever knob sub-assy (manual transaxle).
