2004 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the exhaust pipe assembly on 2004 Scion xB?
A: Start exhaust pipe assembly repair and servicing operations by removing the shift lever knob sub-assembly and then extracting the console box assembly rear and the floor panel brace front by unfastening their respective 2 bolts. Unfastening the bolt and clamp releases the exhaust pipe assembly tail so the user can disconnect the 2 exhaust pipe supports while extracting the entire tail section along with its gasket. To service the exhaust pipe assembly front you must disconnect the heated oxygen sensor connectors, delete the grommet followed by removing its two bolts and compression springs. First disconnect 2 exhaust pipe supports and extract the exhaust pipe front from the vehicle after separating the gasket from the exhaust manifold and the pair of heated oxygen sensors. The procedure for installing the exhaust pipe assembly front begins with attaching the 2 heated oxygen sensors at 44 Nm torque (449 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.). To check the compression spring length use vernier calipers where it should measure at least 40.5 mm (1.594 in.) or else replace it. A plastic-faced hammer and wooden block should be used for tapping in a new gasket until it reaches exhaust manifold flush position with the correct gasket orientation while avoiding reusing the gasket. Begin by attaching the exhaust pipe supports together before installing the front exhaust pipe section with the two compression springs and two bolts that need 43 Nm (438 kgf-cm, 32 ft.lb.) torque. Reinstall the heated oxygen sensor connectors while installing their grommet. The exhaust pipe tail installation process requires a fresh gasket on the exhaust pipe front while the 2 exhaust pipe supports need to be positioned before inserting the exhaust pipe tail with its clamp and bolt buttoned at 32 Nm (326 kgf-cm, 24 ft. lbs.). Conclude the process by inspecting exhaust gas leaks before you reinstall the floor panel brace front as well as the console box assembly rear and shift lever knob sub-assembly (M/T transaxle).
