2005 Scion xB Clock Spring Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Clock Spring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2005 Scion xB?
A: A replacement of the Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring should begin with battery negative terminal disconnection and observing restraint systems service precautions. The first requirement is to position the front wheels directly ahead before removing the horn button assembly and the steering wheel assembly through use of Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021). The first step is to take out the 3 screws holding up the steering column cover before proceeding to disconnect and remove the clock spring sub-assembly that requires separating connectors from the Air Bag and the cable assembly then dislodging 3 claws to separate it. The clock spring sub-assembly requires examination for any connector damage including scratches or cracks and also needs inspection for cracks dents or chips. When these conditions appear, swap it for a new assembly. Mount the new clock spring sub-assembly on the vehicle by first setting the turn signal switch to neutral while attaching the Air Bag connector followed by engaging the 3 claws to install it then placing back the steering column cover with its 3 screws. Adjust the clock spring sub-assembly by beginning with 90 seconds of battery negative terminal disconnection and ignition switch off state before counterclockwise clock spring spinning until firm then moving to clockwise rotation of 2.5 turns for mark alignment. To complete the procedure the steering wheel assembly must be installed next before moving onto steering wheel center point assessment and the installation of the horn button assembly followed by button inspection and SRS warning light verification.
