2004 Scion xB Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How do you replace the Clock Spring Assembly / Spiral Cable on 2004 Scion xB?
A: When replacing the Clock Spring Assembly / Clock Spring users should first follow restraint systems service precautions and disconnect the battery negative terminal. The repair procedure begins by aligning the front wheels parallel to one another followed by Horn Button Assy extraction along with Steering Wheel Assy removal through Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021). The Clock Spring Sub-Assy can be extracted after disconnecting both Air Bag connectors and the clock spring sub-assy connector and freeing its 3 claws. The clock spring sub-assy must undergo an inspection for connector scratches and connector cracks with additional checks for cracks dents or chips along the parts that need replacing. To install the new clock spring subassy first set the turn signal switch to neutral then fasten the 3 claws while connecting the Air Bag connector and the connector. Reinstall and fasten the steering column cover through its 3 mounting screws. The adjustment of the clock spring sub-assy requires turning off the ignition and disconnecting the battery negative terminal for at least 90 seconds before performing counterclockwise clock spring adjustment until firm while also rotating clockwise about 2.5 turns to align marks which will create 2.5 turns to both the left and right of center position. The installation of Steering Wheel Assy includes inspection of steering wheel center point and Horn Button Assy installation with subsequent inspections followed by a check of the SRS warning light.
