2005 Scion xA Power Steering Pump Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the power steering pump on 2005 Scion xA?
A: The service and repair process for the power steering pump starts with disreturning the front wiper arms (LH and RH) and hood to cowl top seal and cowl top ventilator louvers (LH and RH) along with windshield wiper link assembly, cowl panel sub-assembly, and vane pump oil reservoir cover. Begin the power steering fluid drain before taking out the front right wheel and right-hand engine under cover. The pressure feed tube assembly needs to be separated with Special Service Tool: 09023-12701 before disconnecting the return hose along with the oil pressure sensor connector. Initial vane pump maintenance begins with removing the bolt while also taking out the stay rear and heat insulator before proceeding to separate the vane pump assembly through bolts B and C while loosening bolt A. Secure the vane pump assembly within a vise and remove the vane pump oil reservoir cap sub-assembly followed by the oil reservoir assembly where specialist tool 09630-00014 (09631-00132) assists while handling the O-ring. The service procedure requires removing the pump bracket front along with the flow control valve, power steering oil pressure sensor, vane pump housing rear, w/pulley shaft sub-assembly, vane pump rotor, cam ring, side plate front in a specific order while removing every O-ring present. The vane pump shaft along with bush in the housing front should receive an inspection for oil clearance and the vane pump rotor and plates must be checked for thickness and clearance while investigating the flow control valve for smooth operation and leakage as well as inspecting the compression spring for free length and the pressure port union for damage. The proper installation requires a new housing oil seal together with a pulley shaft sub-assembly, side plate front equipped with new O-rings, cam ring followed by the vane pump rotor with plates, and snap ring. Installation of vane pump housing rear requires a new O-ring while following torque requirements and achieving proper alignment. The preload should be validated through normal pump rotation combined with rotating torque measurement. Install the power steering oil pressure sensor using a new O-ring then install the flow control valve components and its parts followed by the pump bracket front and vane pump oil reservoir assembly and cap sub-assembly according to torque specifications. Install the vane pump assembly together with necessary V belt tension control and secure the rear vane pump stay. Use Special Service Tool: 09023-12701 to properly connect the pressure feed tube assembly while observing torque specifications and complete the process by adding the return hose and oil pressure sensor connector. The vane pump requires belt adjustment followed by drive belt inspection of tension and deflection levels while technicians need to measure and add power steering fluid before bleeding the system and spotting any leaks. Reinstallation begins by putting on the right-hand engine under cover together with the specified torque for the right-hand front wheel and checking power steering fluid volume in the reservoir before reinstalling the vane pump oil reservoir cover along with the cowl panel sub-assembly, windshield wiper link assembly, cowl top ventilator louvers on both sides and the hood to cowl top seal and front wiper arms (LH and RH).
