2005 Scion xA Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the alternator assembly on 2005 Scion xA?
A: First remove the terminal cap and then disconnect the generator wire while taking off its associated nut and generator connector before removing the wire harness clamp. Remove the bolts A and B to lower tension on the fan and generator V ribbed belt before taking off the belt and fan. Start by removing bolt A together with its associated nut from the fan belt adjusting bar then proceed with taking off bolt B and the generator it holds. Both the generator and the fan belt adjusting bar should first connect to their respective bolts B and A at audio torque 11 Nm (112 kgf.cm, 8 ft.lbf). Place the fan and generator V-ribbed belt on both pulleys temporarily before inserting the adjusting bar toward the front of the vehicle between the engine mounting bracket and generator. Focus the adjustment on the V-ribbed belt tension while avoiding insertion between the oil control valve and generator to prevent damage. Begin by tightening bolt A to 19 Nm (189 kgf.cm, 14 ft.lbf). After that tighten bolt B to 54 Nm (551 kgf.cm, 40 ft.lbf). Install the wire harness clamp and connect the generator connector before installing the generator wire with its nut tightened to 9.8 Nm (100 kgf.cm, 7 ft.lbf) and around the terminal cap. Finally, inspect the drive belt.
