2005 Scion tC Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Timing Chain on 2005 Scion tC?
A: The CHAIN SUB-ASSEMBLY (2AZ-FE) replacement starts with disconnecting the negative battery terminal followed by removing the hood sub-assembly, front wheel RH and the engine under covers RH and LH along with the front fender apron seal RH and engine cover sub-assembly No. 1 by unfastening its two nuts. The draining process of engine oil must be completed before removing the exhaust pipe assembly front together with fan and generator V-belt using Special Service Tool: 09249-63010 as well as the generator assembly. After separating the vane pump assembly through the same tool operators must follow a procedure for engine mounting insulator RH removal which includes bolt extraction and separation of the oil reservoir followed by use of a transmission jack to lower the engine. Start by detaching wiring from the V-ribbed belt tensioner and ignition coil assembly with the cylinder head cover sub-assembly and hoses until you can lift the engine. Use engine hangers for hanging the engine during the removal process of the crankshaft position sensor and oil pan sub-assembly. Special Service Tool: 09032-00100 enables the cutting of sealer applications. Align the crankshaft pulley groove to the timing mark "0" while checking both camshaft timing gears for positioning the No. 1 cylinder at TDC/Compression. The crankshaft pulley removal requires Special Service Tools: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 and 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021). The service procedure begins by removing the chain tensioner assembly No.1 together with timing chain or belt cover sub-assembly, timing gear case or timing chain case oil seal, crankshaft position sensor plate No.1, timing chain guide, chain tensioner slipper, chain sub-assembly, and chain vibration damper No.1. The procedure for installing or removing No.2 chain sub-assembly requires rotating the crankshaft 90 degrees counterclockwise followed by using a 4 mm diameter bar to secure the oil pump drive shaft gear before taking out the components. Set the crankshaft key then join yellow mark links to timing marks before securing the oil pump drive shaft gear properly. The last step includes installing the crankshaft timing gear or sprocket and chain vibration damper No.1 and chain sub-assembly with proper alignment of all timing marks.
