2005 Scion tC Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the radiator assembly on 2005 Scion tC?
A: The first step for radiator assembly (2AZ-FE) overhaul involves extracting the radiator drain cock plug together with its installed O-ring. Use Special Service Tool: 09230-01010 (09231-01010, 09231-01030) with the claw fitted to the overhaul handle to set dimension B between 0.2 and 0.3 mm using the stopper bolt while protecting the claw from damage during the process. Uncaulk the core plate through gradual straightening until the stopper bolt interferes with the tool operation. The upper radiator tank needs removal by tapping its bracket with a soft hammer before removing its O-ring. The process should be replicated for the lower radiator tank installation. The core sub-assembly needs inspection for damage and pliers should be used to fix any core plate groove deformation while a replacement or repair will be needed if the groove bottom becomes damaged because the radiator will require replacement after two recaulking cycles. Attach the upper radiator tank to the core plate by checking that no foreign matter exists within the groove and subsequently install a fresh O-ring without twisting it before fitting the radiator tank while preserving the O-ring from harm then use a hammer to tap the core plate and remove all gaps. Apply the same steps for installing the lower radiator tank. For core plate caulking use Special Service Tool: 09230-01010 (09231-01010, 09231-01020) by following these steps: place punch assembly into overhaul handle then adjust stopper bolt to establish dimension B at 8.4 mm. Press the tool against core plate in sequential order while avoiding pipes or tank ribs and brackets as well as checking core plate height (H) should measure between 8.7 to 9.1 mm; perform additional adjustments if needed. Finish the process by installing a fresh O-ring on the drain cock plug before putting back the drain cock plug.
