2005 Scion tC Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Clutch Master Cylinder Assembly (MTM) on 2005 Scion tC?
A: The Clutch Master Cylinder Assembly (MTM) service and repair procedure starts with draining clutch fluid then cleaning off brake fluid exposure to painted surfaces. First disconnect the clutch reservoir tube through clip removal and then remove the brake master cylinder sub-assembly and the brake booster assembly. A container should be used to collect fluid as part of this process. Business Special Service Tool 09023-00101 will assist with disconnecting the clutch master cylinder to flexible hose tube while catching all fluid. The first step involves removing the clutch master cylinder push rod clevis with hole pin through the removal of its clip and hole pin. Following this step, the technician should remove the clutch master cylinder assembly by loosening the two nuts. You need to use a pin punch to drive out the slotted spring pin and then use a hammer before you remove the inlet union with grommet along with the clevis by loosening the lock nut and finally removing the lock nut from the push rod. Use snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring after pushing on the piston rod through the cylinder body so that you can safely extract the push rod from the cylinder body taking note that the piston might become dislodged. Pull out the stop plate from the push rod together with the spring-equipped piston from the cylinder while avoiding damage to inner cylinder parts. The installation process begins by adding lithium soap base glycol grease to specific parts and then putting the piston along with spring inside the cylinder. After that, attach the stop plate to the push rod while reinserting it back into the cylinder body. The installation process starts with snap ring plier insertion to place the snap ring as you work on the piston rod. After that, mount the boot onto the cylinder body and finish by adding the push rod lock nut followed by temporary clevis connection with the lock nut. Last step is to add the inlet union and new grommet. Push the slotted spring pin through its slot until it extends to 1.5 to 3.5 mm (0.059 to 0.138 inch). The installation process must begin with attaching the clutch master cylinder assembly using two nuts torqued to 12 Nm (120 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). Afterwards, apply MP grease to the hole pin contact surface along with the clevis bush which will later connect to the clutch pedal sub-assembly through the hole pin followed by clip installation. Use Special Service Tool 09023-00101 to install the flexible hose tube to the clutch master cylinder and tighten it to 15 Nm using 155 kgf-cm torque followed by connecting the clutch reservoir tube with the clip while the red mark must be facing up. After reinstallation of the brake booster assembly and brake master cylinder sub-assembly it is necessary to perform brake line and clutch pipe line bleeding while filling the brake reservoir tank with clutch fluid. The technician torques the clutch line to 8.4 Nm (85 kgf-cm, 74 inch lbs.) while performing inspections to check brake pedal height before adjusting the clutch pedal sub-assembly followed by another brake line bleed and final leakage checks in both brake and clutch systems. The final task includes checking the liquid volume in the reservoir.
