2004 Toyota Solara Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What is the procedure to service and repair the Parking Brake Shoe with a 171 mm rear disc on 2004 Toyota Solara?
A: The parking brake assembly service requires first removing the rear wheel then separating the rear disc brake caliper assembly LH by uninstalling the 2 bolts without affecting the flexible hose. The rear disc can come off by releasing the parking brake; mark and remove it if difficulty occurs by adjusting the shoe until wheel rotation becomes easy. This procedure calls for the brake drum gauge to check the inside diameter of the rear disc; if it exceeds 171 mm (6.73 inch) the brake disc needs replacement. Use needle-nose pliers to remove Parking brake shoe return tension springs No.1 and afterward extract both the parking brake shoe strut LH along with its compression spring. To remove the parking brake shoe assembly LH No.2 and No.1 you must release the cup claw which enables you to disconnect the parking brake cable No.3 from the shoe lever and take off the tension spring and shoe adjuster screw set. Begin the procedure by disassembling the shoe hold-down springs and 4 cups together with 2 pins. Then proceed to remove the C-washer using a screwdriver and separate the shim and shoe lever from the parking brake shoe assembly LH No.2. Use a ruler to check the shoe lining thickness which should be higher than 1.0 mm (0.039 inch); switch out the brake shoe in such cases. A disc inspection using disc chalk must be followed by grinder adjustment of the shoe lining when insufficient contact exists between disc and lining. The backing plate should get high temperature grease applied before installing the shoe lever and shim to the rear shoe using a new C-washer; use a feeler gauge to check clearance which must be under 0.35 mm (0.0138 inch) before replacing the shim. After bolting the grease onto the adjustment element the technician will install shoe adjusting screw assemblies and tension springs along with securing two pins, four cups and two shoe hold-down springs. The next step includes connecting parking brake cable No.3 with the shoe lever before placing both front and rear parking brake shoes. The parking brake shoe strut LH with its compression spring needs installation onto the parking brake shoe assemblies. Thread the 2 return tension springs No.1 onto their positions with needle-nose pliers starting from the front side and finishing with the rear side. All parts should be correctly mounted to check that no oil or grease exists on what will serve as friction surfaces. After setting the matchmarks on the rear disc installation, temporarily fasten the hub nuts but remove the hole plug. Next adjust the shoes until the disc locks while contracting the shoe adjuster until disc rotation is smooth and returns to 8 notches. Affirm there is no brake drag prior to placing the hole plug in position. Poster the rear brake caliper unit LH assembly using 2 bolts while tightening them to 62 Nm (630 kgf-cm, 46 ft. lbs.) before securing the rear wheel with 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) torque. Complete the inspection of parking brake lever travel by making necessary adjustments when required.
