• Q: How to service and repair the throttle body assembly on 2004 Toyota Matrix?

  A: The first procedure for servicing the throttle body requires draining the coolant before starting work. Start by removing cylinder head cover No.2 through the removal of 2 nuts along with 2 clips. Service of the air cleaner cap sub-assembly requires disconnecting MAF connector and VSV connector and 3 vacuum hoses while loosing the air cleaner hose clamp to disconnect air cleaner hose No.1 prior to removing the cap. Take off air cleaner hose No.1 then follow by separating the accelerator control cable assembly. The removal of the throttle body assembly requires disconnecting the throttle position sensor connector as well as the throttle body ISC valve assembly connector and the PCV hose and two water by-pass hoses. The throttle body assembly requires the removal of 5 bolts along with 2 nuts for Transaxle M/T while Transaxle A/T requires 3 bolts and 2 nuts alongside throttle body bracket and accelerator cable bracket. You need to remove 2 screws from the E.F.I. throttle position sensor before taking off the throttle body idle speed control valve assembly by unscrewing 3 screws and disposing of the gasket. A new gasket should be installed to the throttle body before securing the idle speed control valve assembly with 3 screws which require a torque of 3.7 N.m (38 kgf.cm, 33 in.lbf). To install the E.F.I. throttle position sensor position the throttle valve in full closure then screw the sensor counterclockwise between 30° to 90° while securing the screws to 2.0 N.m (20 kgf.cm, 18 in.lbf). Secure the accelerator control bracket with 2 bolts that require 13 N.m (133 kgf.cm, 9.6 ft.lbf) tightening torque on a per transaxle type basis. Install a new gasket on the intake manifold before installing the throttle body using appropriate bolts and nuts which should be tightened to 30 N.m (306 kgf.cm, 22 ft.lbf) and 13 N.m (133 kgf.cm, 9.6 ft.lbf). Secure all necessary connections consisting of 2 water by-pass hoses together with PCV hose and throttle body idle speed control valve assembly connector with throttle position sensor connector. The air cleaner cap sub-assembly experiences reinstallation followed by attaching the air cleaner hose along with 3 vacuum hoses, VSV connector, and intake air flow meter connector.
