2004 Toyota Matrix Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the lower ball joint assembly front LH on 2004 Toyota Matrix?
A: The first step to replace the lower ball joint assembly front LH begins by jacking up the front side of the vehicle to inspect for assembly rattle. Please remove the front wheel and front axle hub LH nut through the use of Special Service Tool: 09930 00Ct10. The procedure starts by disconnecting the speed sensor front LH (with ABS) before using Special Service Tool: 09628-02011 to separate the tie rod end sub-assembly LH. The first step involves dismantling the front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No.1 LH together with the front axle assembly LH while the subsequent step includes the removal of the lower ball joint assembly front LH by removing its cotter pin and castle nut. Detach the lower ball joint assembly from the steering knuckle LH through the use of Special Service Tool: 09628-62011. Before installing the nut on the lower ball joint assembly front LH, perform five bouncing periods of the ball joint stud while inspecting the assembly. Use a torque wrench to verify the turning torque ranges from 0.98 - 4.9 Nm (10 - 50 kgf-cm) or 8.7 - 43 inch lbs. Lower ball joint assembly front LH should be installed onto steering knuckle LH while tightening the castle nut to 103 Nm (1050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) followed by new cotter pin installation. Expertly place the front axle assembly LH along with the front suspension arm sub-assembly lower No.1 LH and the tie rod end sub-assembly LH and the speed sensor front LH (with ABS). The installation of the front axle hub LH nut requires Special Service Tool: 09931-00020 together with the front wheel and 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 761 ft. lbs.) torque setting. The last steps include checking the front wheel alignment while verifying the ABS speed sensor signal through ABS functionality.
